I'm not really sure what to think of this. On one hand - his motivation is transparent (at least that's my opinion), but on the other if the festival can run itself without tax payers money then that is good thing for it to be able to do.

Re: Hear we go again....
The federal government should not be funding parades in Toronto. Toronto is a big boy that can fund their own parades.
from the article 'The Harper government is being labelled homophobic for refusing to fund Toronto’s gay pride festival this year." Sure, the commie star at it again. Interesting that almost 2/3rds of the vote on the article page says no to funding. |
Re: Hear we go again....
If Federal money is (was) being shelled out for this festival, would all applicants be equally eligible for a share of it? For example, would a neo-conservative Christian anti-gay group be able to apply for funding for their float to be entered into the Pride parade?
It's just that that American professor pastor fellow (you know, him with the nice big moustache, strange taste in personal assistants...) could take part in Pride while apparently be seen to be preaching against it. Win, win - surely that's what tax-payers money is for? |
Re: Hear we go again....
Pride is labeled more as a 'diversity parade' in Toronto these days... in fact it's a little too straight for my liking.

There's no such thing as a metric penis. No one advertises an improbable number of uncut millimetres (not that I'd know how many dozen millimetres is probable anyway). |

What's sauce for the goose, it seems to me, should be sauce for the gander. |

It's not clear to me when that dichotomy developed but one can hardly expect the Harper government to condone homosexuality; that's not what they, er, stand for.

They probably think the gander has enough sauce already. Although the calgary stampede also sounds a bit brokeback if you ask me.

I disagree that it is OK. I hope the feds cut funding to the stampede as well. These festival/parade/etc's are pefectly capable of running themselves. Your assumption that it is because one group is gay holds no wieght. It is simply an assumption based on nothing.

But it is OK as far as this government is concerned - that's rather the point. I could understand if Clement's excuse (that they're cutting funding from big-city events in order to support a larger number of smaller events outside the main population centres) wasn't quite so transparently a load of complete bollocks.

But once again, prove that the cut in funding is related to being gay? All of those festivals in Novo's link should be very capable of running themselves without the feds support.
What is the balance of probabilities? Given of course that the Harperists are unreconstructed homophobic religious nutjobs with not an iota of humanity in their collective conscience. |
