As a teenager when the latest fad / group came out I remember my nan / mum saying "who / what are they."

And you look at them in stunned silence, like they've been to Mars for a year. "Where the hell have you been XXXXX is the best thing since sliced bread - what do you do live under a rock?" "What do you mean you can't identify Simon Lebon in a line up blindfolded?"

The on the radio / TV etc - it seems the latest trendy thing is this new boy band One Direction. I say new because they are to me. I didn't even know they were from the UK let alone barely old enough to take themselves off to bed.

And it made me realise that it finally happened.

I got old and out of touch :(

One of our esteemed although somewhat absent of late BE colleagues is rather taken by them if I remember correctly. I'm not sure which of them is his favourite though. :confused:

It's when a 'new' song is released and it's a remake of a remake of a remake - and you remember the original, but it was a remake of the original that you danced to at school disco's.

Oh and calling a school disco a disco and not a dance:eek::rofl:

They even have the audacity to start selling concert tickets for 2013, what makes them think they are going to be around that long?

Mandy!!! Did you have to put this into words? I am heavily into denial here! To the 'rest of you' I am 'young, fun and absolutely gorgeous'.....at least for the next little while!

PP, this is so true, you took the words out of my mouth, lol.

Only last week a song came on the radio in the car and I said "what the hell is this tosh? I remember when this came out the first time around" (can't remember what song it was now :o (an age thing)). My daughter rolled her eyes at me in the way that I used to at my parents.

I've always looked at it this way, and have convinced both sprogs of the sense of the point: Good music is music which stands the test of time, bad or derivative music fails to do that. Enjoy the crap by all means but don't pretend it's good.

The only reason I know them is because my youngest loves them and i'm so bored of the one album:eek: (see I still call them albums:lol:) she plays over and over and over again.

Not really so simple. Leaving classical music aside, the "modern stuff" needs to stand the test of time too.

As I said, if you want to hum along with the latest spearmint commercial, go ahead, have a blast.

Choosing any example will be contentious, but do you think Justin Bieber will be remembered and listened to longer than Symphony for the Devil, Eleanor Rigby or even The Piano has been Drinking, Not Me?
