Re: Groceries
Groceries seem to be getting expensive.
dozen eggs bacon 3lb oranges bag frozen fruit cheese milk coke zero cheese cake (i need a treat and its on sale for $4) ground beef Total- $65.33 (which includes 0.62 GST & 3.84 eco fees) I did a mock shop at a grocery store near my mom, same items there would cost $39 CAD or around $28 US$ (+ most of the items in the US are larger so you get more as well) And to think people in California complain about the high grocery prices...ha ha |

But what you save on groceries you would spend that and more on healthcare/meds in the US. In my experience cost of living in the UK/US/Canada on balance is about the same.

Re: Groceries
First of the chives from my friend's back yard; this little bunch will have a few applications over the next day or two. Down to my last couple of green onions, but it doesn't matter now!

I never liked 2 liters as I don't drink enough and it goes flat before I can drink it all, and cans can be taken on the go. Looks like 2 liter bottles are currently running $1.68 sale price, limit 4. Beef & cheese alone are almost $20, but cheese I use on almost everything and its a good snack that is filling. Just a block of regular mild cheddar, nothing fancy. Eggs were the cheapest at $2.98 Ground beef was estimated to be $9, but price will depend on what is available at the time of the shop, could go down, could go up. |
Re: Groceries
I started making a list but not much on it yet. There are a few things on the No Frills flyer I might as well buy, but nothing I'm in a rush for. I considered going into Independent today because they have the bakery there, and if my smoked pork shoulder comes out well I'd like some kaiser buns, but that can wait a day as well, and I thought about getting a tub of coleslaw, then remembered I have carrots and just bought a nice cabbage, so might as well make some. So far it seems that I can plan a week ahead and have a general idea of what I'm going to eat and how I can use up my groceries without them going bad, but I still have to compost some of my vegetables, usually the ones I buy because they're already reduced and my plan of using them right away falls through. Tomatoes are easy, I love bacon and tomato sandwiches for breakfast, and when the tomatoes start getting soft it's time to make a little sauce or make saganaki, which is a similar base to marinara.

Neither of us have much of an appetite. Bananas are something I have to buy once weekly, we go through a lot of apples too. Bread purchase has gone down dramatically as nobody is taking sandwiches to work...or leftovers. |
Re: Groceries
I went to the shops today and it was another world compared to the last few weeks. No more social distancing, no more following the lines on the floor. Groups of hipsters clogging the spice aisles, families with myriad children, no masks. It was quite a shock after being used to disciplined shopping.

I find this is very true for all of us presently. I know Oink started a thread with regard to weight and I have to say ours as a family is decreasing. We just aren’t eating much.

I guess though when there is so little to do, body doesn't need as much energy, I was thinking back to how much I used to eat working at the airport, so much food, but then I guess when being so active and physical more energy is needed and thus more food. |

I have been trying to find a mask but haven't been able to find a reusable one anywhere, although we have a couple cheap disposable ones but they wont last long, they don't seem effective for anything really considering how cheap and thin they are. I couldn't spend hours on a plane in a mask though, so I will decline to fly until such a time masks are not necessary. |

T&T markets are requiring masks and apparently even doing temperature checks. Although I don't know what temperature they use to determine if you have a fever. Air Canada will begin temperature checks as well, 99.6 and above can't fly.

I ordered some on Amazon - as did a few others - and I had the usual notice to say they'd been sent, followed by Amazon advising the seller was no longer trading and to apply for the refund if they didn't arrive. I hoped they had been sent before ceasing trading but it quickly became obvious it was all a scam from the beginning. Of course I got my refund but it wasted a few weeks when I could have been trying elsewhere. Last week there was a whole bunch on Walmart.ca and it seems the same thing has happened there with tracking information that proves meaningless. I'm not expecting them to arrive either. Walmart seems to have increased its use of 3rd party sellers and judging by this order and a previous one they're not proving very reliable. So where does one get masks from? Any kind. I'd rather not be cutting up clothes or tying hankies around my face. If I had one big enough. Hankie, not face. |
Re: Groceries
Last Friday i ordered 2 of these from Calgary so should be here next week.

Re: Groceries
The pick up service at Super Store is not bad, seem more likely to get everything you order as well. Do have to pick it up, but they put it all in the trunk and there is no contact with the employees except by phone, ends up cheaper by $10-$12 dollar due to no tip and at least this time around no pick up fee.

Did I misunderstand Bristol on the Coronavirus thread, did he say that Costco sells wine and beer?

Also you don't need to be a Costco member to be able to use the liquor store. |

When I go see my mom and we got to Costco in California, the amount of booze in the store is crazy, they also sell live lobster and crabs and other seafood that I haven't seen in BC stores. |

As far as I know California doesn't allow drive thru liquor stores, when I lived in Arizona back in 2000-2001, I was surprised to see such a thing, not sure if its still allowed in Arizona or not though. California though is pretty liberal when it comes to booze. |

Re: Groceries
I gave feedback (not a survey or rating) to Instacart about a couple of website features - one that's disappeared and a new one that didn't work.
They responded within an hour and gave me a $5 credit  I wasn't even complaining about anything. |
Re: Groceries
48 Pilsner from the liquor store, and 24 Big Rock apple cider from storage at work. So far the food is holding out ok.
|
Re: Groceries
It's easier getting grocery pick up slots now, lines to get into the store are longer, so seems maybe people are choosing to go back to shopping vs online ordering and pick up and the crapshoot it can be.
|
Re: Groceries
Quite often, when the Instacart page changes to say a shopper is putting your order together, it can be 30-40 minutes before anything happens.
Is this because they are waiting outside the store to get in or because they logged on to your order early(perhaps to reserve it if it was an easy one or some other reason) and they've not even left home yet? I had one where something was in the cart very quickly but it's usually at least half an hour. |
Re: Groceries
After revelling in my last can of UK-bought baked beans, I swore no more experimenting with the local ones. Then I found that WalMart at Golden Mile now has a little british section. Four pack of Heinz (meh) beans, just under $8. Decent value. Treated myself to a jar of Branston at the same time!

When I 'discovered' it I was just aware of "something I'd not seen for a long time" coupled with "Oh look they're selling it as well as Bulk Barn" and then suddenly realising I was looking at Rose's Lime marmalade, Jacob Club biscuits, Branston, Haywards Pickled Onions (proper brown ones), Piccalilli, Custard creams, Bourbon creams, Flakes, Hobnobs and so on... |

It seems just about every Walmart store has a Brit section, there just don't seem to be signs advertising it as such. And that was before they started to go 'super centre'
And it's a fairly new one too (Alliston, ON). I have to drive to Barrie for such luxuries. |

Re: Groceries
Pork seems to be in short supply, tried 3 times now to get some pork chops of some sort, and 3 different stores no luck, all out.
Groceries have certainly gone up in price, no doubt. Doctor wants me to eat low fodmap foods, but goodness is it ever expensive, so not entirely sure we can afford to do this low fodmap thing. Frozen berries, strawberries, pineapple 4 bags total. (cheaper than fresh fruit) 2kg bag of chicken. no name frozen brand 2 boxes corn flakes, pain Basmati Rice Stevia 24 eggs Lactose Free 1% Milk Two 2 liter cartons 2 bags cut Cut Broccoli, frozen Naval Oranges, 2lbs 5lb bag whole carrots This was $120 and its barely anything...ha ha |
