Goggle box- anything worth watching on TV?

Not sure when the last thread was done- probably last week and I haven't noticed! Anyhow tell us what you have been watching and should we definitely watch or avoid like the plague.

Happy Valley- Season two. A BBC series, starring Sarah Lancashire as a "gritty" police officer- season one was great, very well acted and well set in Northen England. A definite :thumbup::thumbup:

I rather liked the documentary about Guns and Roses on BBC4. The new series of Shetland is good. And while not new, there is a nice group series of podcasts from Radio4 where Michael Sandel discusses different ethical and moral issues/topics.

If you have one of these new fangled multi-inch LED LCD TVs then look closely.
Around the outside is this narrow strip of black plastic.
If you stare at it long enough you'll forget the trash being seen on the screen and probably fall asleep which will leave you in a far better state than watching whatever you planned to watch in the first place.

Just my usual stuff, but we are old school and still use cable....

Monday- Only Jane the Virgin.

Tuesday- NCIS and if on Railroad Alaska just because I like trains.

Wed- I think is L & O SVU

Sunday- Good Wife and Madam Secretary.

I also find Schitts Creek on CBC okay enough.

I also watch various shows on Discovery ID, shows like Murder Book, Homicide Hunter, and other crime shows, some are interesting, some not so much.

I also watch some stuff on PBS, mostly American Experience which is the name but it's made up of various documentaries about things, last week was Bonnie and Clyde for example, not sure what this weeks was about, haven't watched it yet.

Oh and since Shaw has provided 2 months of shomi (would never pay money for it though) I find Fresh off the Boat entertaining enough, a pretty stupid show in reality, but passes time in the middle of the night.

Cable is fine. Night time is typically for sleep- as you know, disordered circadian rhythms are not good for your health

Oh I know sleep is important, my sleep system is all screwy and well a certain medication the doctor has me trying is a stimulant and well has made sleeping even more difficult, so I shall be discussing if said stimulant is necessary.

I've had a messed up sleep pattern nearly my entire adult life, maybe from all the shift work and overnight work I did for so many years?

I did talk to my GP but his solution was pills, and eh not a fan of sleeping pills and how they make you feel the next day, they certainly put you to sleep, but at least for me, I do not feel rested the next day, and kind of feel hungover.

Spin (Les Hommes de l'ombre) comes highly recommended so I've downloaded the first series. I'll get around to the latest Shetland soon and Happy Valley is also on the agenda.

Still have to catch up on The Wire and might get around to Boardwalk Empire one day.

What, nothing tickles your fancy?? I have watched some great stuff on other people's recommendation which I would never have watched otherwise or are you just a non TV kind of guy?

The programme on 5 last night was interesting, regarding giving benifits families 1 year of benifits all at once £26,500 then sit back and see what they do with it

One of the sons purchased a PS4 and games so at least that money went to good use

If you have a lot of time and not a lot of money then a games console isn't a bad purchase really.

I watched a terribly dark and horrific show recently called "Outlander".

Peaky Blinders was good but season 1 only 6 episodes.

I saw the first episode of that and thought it was decent. But it's a series and I can never be arsed with the commitment required to keep up with them.

If season 2 of Happy Valley is anywhere nearly as good as the first one, then thats a must watch!! That was British TV at its best. It was proof that British TV is the best in the world, one of the things i do actually miss form old Blighty actually.

Ive got many of my co workers and friends into many British shows.

Yep, I can believe that.
When I first bought my house back in 84 and money was tight, the TV/VCR rental might have seemed unnecessary but for the price of 2 nights in the pub I could be entertained every night of the week and weekends too.

Yay, in the mail today my two DVDs of the not very well known but brilliant BBC series (x2) Joking Apart.

I've hunted high and low for it online but never found it.

It took them long enough to release it on DVD and even then the only supplier/producer wouldn't sell it outside the UK.

Watched Ep1 of new season last night. If it's anything to go by, the season's going to be a corker. It's a great show. Some of Season 1's characters and some new ones.

Oink's GNR recommendation is something I might watch, or some some documentaries, but not that into the many drama series and not at all into the horror of reality TV. Also, find if there's increasingly good content on You Tube these days (including some 'best bits' from talk shows).

Fair enough, each to their own. Im definitely with you on the Reality show rap- I agree - I sometimes watch Youtube for Graham Norton and the like - more the older shows but prefer to get the up to date stuff by streaming it and watch the full show if it is worth it. I have a mixture of sources that I watch but don't have a TV package- never watched it and the commercials drove me mad and.... the bulk of it was shite!

Re: Goggle box- anything worth watching on TV?

What gets me is the number of those bizarre travel shows on at the moment that have some ex politician showing you around the history of Britain’s tertiary sewage works or an old luvvie wandering across a field in the Scilly Isles frightening the animals and moaning about the heat. If they want a decent programme like that they should to get my nan to do one on delights of South Yorkshire’s bingo clubs or an exposé on the alleged underworld connections in the British whippet racing scene.

I actually did mean it's gone to a good use, the rest of the cash will probably get wasted and they will at least still have a game box to play when the programme makers are all long gone

Happy valley was too gritty for me last time so I probably won't be watching this one.
I loved War and Peace, will watch it all again. There's a good documentary on The Romanovs.
Otherwise we watch Endeavour, The Good Wife, midsummer Murders, Murdoch Mysteries.

There's a new series starting next week, The Night Manager, it's from a John Le Carre book. Should be good.

Life's too short Warwick Davis- I liked this- didn't take himself too seriously like he did in the second season of An idiot abroad I loved this too- Karl Pilkington does make me chuckle.
I'm binging on the U.S. The Office Dwight and Kevin just crack me up

Jericho's not bad, but doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe it eventually would have done if it hadn't been cancelled.

Best thing I've watched recently is Mike Tyson Mysteries. A show which makes even less sense, but is very funny if you like their sense of humour.

Which Jericho do you speak of? There was an American one a few years back that just went on and on and I got bored.

I've got my missus hooked on The Darling Buds of May. You can find it on Youtube, if you try hard enough.

I knew she'd like it and she's watched all the Poirot episodes already.

She's rather into Brit TV. Not really surprising. It's a hell of a lot better than North America churns out.

Oh, I was assuming people were talking about the American post-nuclear-war show? Didn't realize there was another one.

Never having watched Poldark I can't comment on that. I thought Jericho was a rip off as you say of Hell on Wheels.

I understand it was the U.S. series that was cancelled.

Thought so. I couldn't quite believe it was the American one and that was how I discovered the other.

Nothing wrong with...what's the expression...slow-burners, but it was painfully slow. Not surprised it was cancelled.
