Go Flames go?!

Re: Go Flames go?!
We'll leave the Maple Leaves out of the conversation and while the Argos have won the odd Grey Cup it doesn't really count when there are only a handful of teams and they juggle the same old NFL rejects among themselves each year. Someone's bound to win it, but it doesn't matter who.

I dunno, it probably depends on where in the country you are, but in Calgary I'd certainly say it goes
NHL Hockey
Junior Hockey
CFL Football
NFL Football
Lacrosse
I'm actually surprised fitba and basketball aren't a bigger deal here...but it could be because there are no major league teams for those here...

Well Toronto has an NBA team.
As for the lacrosse comment, I wasn't talking about popularity I was referring to Canada's two official national sports.

The only major league baseball team in Canada is in Toronto. The Expos left Montreal in 2004.
Colchar, on BE it's iced hockey, get used to it.
The term is stupid.

B: iced hockey iced hockey iced hockey
Kind of rolls off the tongue, doesn't it?
The origin is clouded in the mists of time but Novocastrian may remember. I think it was derived from iced cappuccino.

Iced Hockey.
Proof positive of the superiority of British humour.

I went to see Streatham Redskins years ago, if I remember rightly Craig Melancon used to play for them. I had a great kebab just round the corner from the rink and my first Wendy burger. Happy days lol!

I didn't know iced hockey was popular over there at all until reading a story in Reader's Digest (2002?) about the Belfast Giants of the Elite league. I found the irony that the game was remarkable there for being one of the few places fans could go to escape sectarian violence and focus their energy on team loyalty fascinating. No politics or religion allowed, only the game.

A fair few decent brawls actually. Those who aren't that good at iced hockey but prepared to put their bodies on the line.
Not a bad evening out. Certainly better than the NHL's attempt at the game.
I think the European version of iced hockey has slightly different sized rinks and rules.

Re: Go Flames go?!
The European rink is larger, not sure about in England. Of course in Britain most of the star players are Canadian, likely those that fall just short of league standards here.

Re: Go Flames go?!
This thread has made me chortle. From the usual uppity whining of our Brampton friend to the woes of Toronto's sports franchises, and only a mention of the poor old Flames at the top of page 1 and the bottom of page 3. What's their record against the Ducks? Not a promising outlook...
Toronto has a national sport: it's deciding which bandwagons to jump on and how soon in the season it's sensible to jump off again. Every bloody year it's the same rigmarole for the iced hockeyists: "it's this year. We'll make the playoffs, honest," only for a mid-season crash and burn. It's instructive that the only year they've made the playoffs in the last decade was when the season was only half its normal length - and then they blew the first round. TFC have been at or near the bottom of the league every season since the franchise started. The Jays haven't seen a playoff game since their world series win over 20 years ago. The Raptors are halfway decent, but have only once been beyond the first round of playoffs, after 7 post-season runs in 20 years of franchise history.
And, as we already know, nobody cares about the CFL or NLL.
I wouldn't mind the Habs having a good run, but I fear they've set themselves a difficult task. I don't care enough to want to sit through a game on the telly, though - life's just too damn short.
