Getting UK DVD's to work

Hello Canadian people, hope you don't mind my popping in but I hope someone can help me out. I have an elderly relative visiting from Canada and I had hoped to send her back with some DVD's. She tells me UK DVD's don't work in her machine. She is in her 70's so in not too up to speed on how these things work and neither am I. Please could someone tell me if there is something she could do to get them to play or would it be possible to maybe take a machine back with her from here and perhaps somehow connect in up to her tv at home? Would very much appreciate any advice, thankyou.

get the make and model number of the dvd player, you can search for a code/crack on the internet which usually involves opening the dvd tray and pushing a few buttons on the remote. This will then give a region menu and if they choose region 0 they should be able to play dvds from most countries

We have 2 dvd players bought in canada and both are region free, they play all our UK discs no problem. It appears only you have to buy the really cheap ones get this, weird I know. Not sure why their so paranoid in N America, after all all UK players are multi region.

No, most will be region 2 locked. Although most can be unlocked.

That's very true. You will be hard pushed to find a DVD player on the shelves listed as multi-region. I had to buy ours off the internet.

I think the issue is - does your relative have anyone else at the Canadian end who is vaguely technical do the work for her? A neighbour? It can be relatively easy to do - but might be beyond her capabilities or comfort level. See if she can tell you the make and model - then you can check if there is an unlock code by googling that?

Or, if not, would she be willing or able to spend $30-$40 on a new one from Walmart and get someone to plug that all in for her??

It's entirely feasible I am sure. Depends on how important it is to view the DVD's and how accessible half an hour of assistance might be ...

thanks for your help everyone, should be able to get her sorted out now. Just thought she'd enjoy some of the Glasgow humour and suchlike. For anyone who misses it, try getting hold of the Still Game dvd's. Very funny, you'd think you were right back in Glesgae :D

The alternative is to rip your R2 DVDs on the computer, burn them yourself as region-free and send her back with those.

Love Still Game btw - Naveed should have his own show though, that'd be even better
