Getting something for free
 

Saw a bikini top in The Bay yesterday that was marked up at $5 rather than $50. I know there are laws where they have to give it to you at that price or give it for free or give it to you at full price. :) Anyone know what would have been the price in this case? I imagine when it was scanned it would come up at $50.

I believe as long as there is signage up saying it's $5, that's the price you'll get it for.

I bought an Eddie Bauer suitcase in Zellers that was wrongly priced, I forget the price but it was sth like 80 CAD marked and it was actually not in the sale and the real price was 160 CAD when I got to the till. They gave it to me for 80 CAD without me even asking for it. I assume The Bay would have the same policy. Grah's wife used to work for them, maybe she could say for sure what their policy is?

I know Steve_P has posted about Safeway and other retailers signing up to some voluntary pricing code, but I can't find it now. Steve, can you post the info again?

I was in Winners once and brought a kids's t-shirt, kids jeans and kids jacket and the jacket was free as they just didn't put it through, don't know how they made that mistake though:blink:

That's the right thing. There is no law in Canada (or the UK come to that) that says a retailer has to sell a product for the price indicated if it is a mistake on their part. Good will dictates they might want to.

If you get this issue, ask what is their scanner policy, at which point the cashier looks blank and thinks you are raving mad. Get the manager if they have no idea what you are talking about, be prepared to explain what it is about.

We have secured more than one good deal because of this. If the product is under $10 and the shelf marker does not agree with the till you get it for free, if it is over $10 you get $10 off.

Similar polices exist in the US as well, such as at Wal-mart.

Honest labeling mistakes are not binding. But as has been posted by others, many retailers will honour erroneous price tags as a goodwill gesture. A couple of times I've been given a deal because a store owner has told me an incorrect price aloud. "Those items are $25, sir." He gets one down from the shelf, sees it's marked $35. "Oops, my mistake, but I'll only charge you the $25."

If the store is using incorrect pricing as an intent to deceive, that's a whole other ball game.
