My (Australian) Dad (died 1964) used to say "for the nonce" to mean "for the time being". I have an idea he got the expression from his pompous English father. I've never met anybody else who has used it in that sense. In Danny's Belmarsh sense, I've seen it in irreverent online forums, but nowhere else.

That's partly because it's much easier just to say 'Peedo' when referring to a child molester outside of prison slang. Not many people would know what a nonce is. I had no idea it was the same as a goof.

Nonce was in common use in London when I grew up. I'd be surprised if it wasn't used in The Sweeney. Pedalo, used in this context is, I think, more recent but widely understood; the connotation of thrashing legs makes it somehow gruesomely appropriate.

43 years of living in Canada, a sister who worked in major crime for 20+ years and 2 brothers who had been in jail, and I have never heard of goof being anything but descriptive of someone or something silly. So as for the "Canadian" definition, I think it's more the one person who is up on prison terminology who's decided that the word is Canadian for pedophile. It's not.

I can assure you that it is a used in Canada as an insult. It's not just in prisons either - although here's a post that might assist your doubts on that part.

I don't think I'm a lady, and I'm not a girl either, I'm a woman. In earlier years when I went out with a man, even for the first time, I paid my way, as if I didn't I might have felt that there was an expectation of sex. I have sex, when and with whom I want, not because I am paid to.

Lots of aspects of day to day life, alcohol, smoking, abortion and sex are treated in an odd fashion in North America. It feels as if they haven't had long enough to process their feelings on the subject, so it all seems a bit knee jerk. Much of it just seems to be a script that is being stuck to, with no real buy in on reality. I'm sure none of this is true in Vancouver or the GTA, but it certainly seems it where I am.

I am the only woman in my road who cuts the lawn and shovels snow or rakes leaves. I am also the only one that actually cooks or, dare I whisper the word....irons, and yes, I do iron clothes for my husband :eek: I wouldn't do it for anyone else, but he also does a thousand things for me, as he's a thoroughly decent human being.

I grew up believing that "Not, the church, not the State, but women must decide their fate" but since arriving here I think equality, feminism and equal opportunities is merely rhetoric for both sexes.

I do hope you find a real, dyed in the wool, woman OP, I always enjoy your posts, and you deserve better....as indeed does Siouxie's junior!

From Blog comments on CBC over the years, it's all over Canada, not just in these parts. Here more too, admittedly, thanks to 'the church' of one kind or another.

Kind of weird that in the UK 'the church' often acts as a conscience for inconsiderate government and in North America (almost) as justification for so much that's bad.

Up around the corner I saw an elderly woman shoveling snow. Probably had no one else.
My mother in law (78) does the deck a lot of the time (not now, with her broken ankle). Next door, the woman does the grass and a bit of shoveling although her husband only uses the snowblower. It was a woman doing grass cutting that I used for the duplex in Summers.

Your description makes Moncton seem 'go ahead' in comparison. :rofl:

The siouxie post on the first page (her son BF & the G/F) 'the dating couple' (or just friends with benefits?), I'm guessing this could be common thing with young love, one of them pays all the bills?

Now, whether that falls into the theme of this thread "gender equality" or when a non-workplace life situation between two people should be a 'why don't we share all of the costs of whatever in our relationship'.... wouldn't go over too well even with me. Live & let live & if it doesn't work, then move on.

Should dating couples from the 'get go' start out with 'we share the cost of all of everything in our relationship'? Is that the way a relationship flourishes, is that what 'gender equality should be, even down to the basic of basic when folks co-habit they should equally do .... meals, cuppa's, laundry, dishes, shopping (and pay for it), cut the grass, shovel the snow to paying each & every bill 50/50 ... and a million other things?

On Gordon & his (not so PC) G*** incorrectly used for siouxie son (was the B/F an idiot or looser) paying for everything in that relationship - I dunno.

For 'good ole Gordon' he is what, 80 years old, born in the outback of OZ, lived in the UK & resides in sun paradise. I remember as a child all kinds of funny words & terms being used in my family, at school, on the wireless, the telly & never a second thought about it....from being 'knocked up, being called a cock(er)'. It seems too me Canada is all about PC, especially when folks don't know the meaning of the word they use and/or that it offends others.

Suppose Gordon had of used 'goofing' as in 'goofing off' (slacking off) we'd all be OK with it. And isn't a 'goofy person' someone with a 'weird look' or 'loose screws in their head'?
