Default In Floor Radiant Heat

Anyone have any experience with with - pro's, con's, pitfalls, things to look for ?

Haven't been to see the house in question but it says it has heated concrete floors on main and upper level.

I had it installed when we built our house a couple of years ago. Each room is zoned, so we can choose the temperature according to need.

I like its efficiency, silent operation and controllability. Mine is combined with a hot water on demand furnace, which makes for a very cost effective solution.

The only downside is heat retention in the concrete slab. Turning the heating off doesn't instantly cool rooms down. The slab retains heat for a day or so. We choose a comfortable level for each room and once fall arrives pretty much leave it set until spring.

Pex pipe is usually pretty good, but if it springs a leak, you have to dig up the floor to find it then fix it.

We put underfloor heating in our UK home - I loved it. So comfortable, and no stuffy zones.

There should never be any joints under the concrete slab so the likelihood of springing a leak should be less than remote.

When you have a power cut, the house stays warm for a couple of days - useful for Canada - but if the house feels a bit chilly, it can take several hours to warm up to what you want.

The downside for us (in the UK - not so relevant here) was no radiators to dry your smalls quickly But your Canadian smalls are used to no radiators so they'll be fine

We have radiant heating in our house, the heating is actually in the ceiling in each room, bit odd bearing in mind heat rises, but having said that it seems to work well and so far we haven't had any probs with it

We have electric underfloor heating by Nuheat in our kitchen and bathrooms. Each room is controlled by programmable thermostats and they heat up quite quickly. It is lovely on a cold morning.

Thanks.... actually being technical hot air rises, heat travels in all directions.

Sounds promising though.

I am acquainted with someone who has a heated driveway. Needless to say "they" will not have to hold flag days for her and she doesn't need a snowblower.

Get it checked out. I have heard of a couple of case where people have had to dig up the entire basement because it started leaking.

I suspect I suspect that it depends upon how well the concrete has been put down. You always seem to get some settling and cracks appearing in a basement floor and that is bound to have an impact on what is essentially platic tubing.
