"Flag poling" - One way vs Round Trip Ticket

As most of you have probably discovered, it's cheaper to buy a round trip ticket over a one-way.

I'm not sure the reasoning for this and are there any catches or risks to doing this?

Just seems crazy that my wife should pay $2000 (one-way) vs. $850 (round trip)

Thoughts?

No brainer - go with the $850 option!

I don't know where you're coming from or travelling to, but Air Transat have good one way deals (or used to). This is the way we did it.

Doesn't flag poling mean a round trip? Round the flag pole and back again?
