Every time I go to the movies in the US I see loads of over weight people walking down the aisles...a huge bucket full of popcorn under one arm and a huge container of soda in the other. They usually go back at least once for refills. Please don't tell me eating and drinking that crap...in those quantities is genetic.

No it's nationalistic

This particular gene affects appetite. It appears that those with the gene will continue to feel hungry when in fact they have eaten enough (satiety as bats noted). Some will exert willpower some will not. That however is quite a different situation than those without the gene eat a moderate amount and fund they feel full. No willpower is required, hence an un level playing field.

There is also the phenomena that dishwashing describes, where some people appear to eat beyond immoderately but do not gain wright. Although I think some research has questioned whether intake is in fact moderate. It may also be down to metabolism and/or exercise (which impacts metabolism).

The difference between those with fast and slow metabolisms (for people that weigh the same) is at most 300 calories per day. There is no gene that allows thin people to eat as much as they want and not gain weight, something that would actually indicate a serious underlying absorption issue. Thin people who claim this overestate the amount they eat in the same way that fat people claim not to eat that much.

Genetics, marketing, processed food, thyroid diseases, pcos, etc. Fat people can keep telling themselves that it isn't their own fault, but really it is. Ok, i'll grant that it is not their fault if they have prader willi syndrome where hunger causes physical pain (although this is very rare).

Good point on the metabolism figure.

So we're back to the FTO satiety gene and marketing. And in many cases gluttony. Nevertheless you ought not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

You can eat a healthy all week but drink 20+ pints of beer and shifting weight is a nightmare.

Not that I'd know as my body is a temple.

There are some medical conditions that make maintaining a healthy weight more difficult, but it is still a matter of adjusting calories eaten to match calories burned doing things.

I'm genetically predisposed to love food

For America, it's a cultural theme of overeating, I must admit. Have you seen them portion sizes? Gotta love it, but the health impact is a bit worrying. They even have all the auto mobile thingys in Walmart etc, reflective of a high fat, low exercise culture

Ok, since you asked, today's food was:

Breakfast of oats, blueberries (also in season), almonds and milk.
Lunch of two poached eggs on toast with Marmite.
Afternoon snack of some crisps and a piece of cheese.
Tea was a salmon (prob about 5oz), veggies, pasta mixed with some cream, I also had a glass of wine.
For pud I had blackberry (from the garden) crumble.

I don't count calories, but I would guess that totals about 2000 or so, maybe a little more, I dunno. I did row 10k today (on a machine, not water, and yes this is slightly smug, but you did ask) so I'm probably going to have some bread, cheese and a pickled egg as an evening snack.

Ciabatta, Port Salut cheese, lots of baby plum tomatoes
Milano salami
Chicken Tikka Masala, rice
Punnet of raspberries
Ham cheese sandwhich
Corn Flakes
Cookies
= 2410 kcal :o

Tis so How long does this cheap salmon season last? I'm enjoyin it, considering stocking up...is that a good idea before they escalate in prices again?

Calories counting is the pits. The weight loss industry is a multi billion dollar industry...anyone who has gone on a diet usually ends us gaining that and more back...voila the multi billion dollar industry lives to see another day again.

Butter on that toast and bread? Unless your portion size is tiny I think that would be way over 2000.

Yesterday I had two eggs on toast, no butter, with spinach. Cycled 16km, not much as I had cycled 35 on Saturday and was a bit tired. Greek yoghurt with plums for a snack. Squash, onions, plain pasta and roast chicken for dinner. Coffees with skimmed milk. No alcohol.

I'm fat. No weight loss this week but I did go out for a curry on Saturday.

Weight loss isn't simple, I saw that earlier you agreed it isn't easy but please don't make references to lard arses. It isn't helpful.

Is that outdoor cycling?

Butter spread thinly doesn't add too many calories.

It depends. This is a good year, but Oink is the person to ask.

I've got a few in the freezer:)

People expect to much to quick and give in when the results aren't there instantly.

Butter and Marmite don't go - too greasy. For me, butter on bread is for soup, or on its own. Anyway, my guess is breakfast 300 cals, lunch 400 (I'm sure this one is right at least), snack 200, tea 1300 - so, yeah, you are probably right that it is over 2000.

Shard Sep 2nd 2014 2:36 am

Re: Fitbit

Butter and Marmite on bread doesn't go, but melted butter and a Marmite on toast (both thinly spread) goes very well!

Butter on crusty French or English bread, thickly spread, is divine. No need for it in sandwiches.

Alan2005 Sep 2nd 2014 3:25 am

Re: Fitbit

I prefer marmite on its own. I don't use butter in sandwiches as there's usually some other condiment that goes better (pickle, mayo, ketchup or what have you) and you don't need both.

I've been in Canada 10 years and still continue my crusade for butter in sandwiches in the place of mayo, honey mustard and other North American abominations.

I can understand wih that other shit, but what's wrong with mayo?

As long as you have a bit of cheese, tomato or salami, why is there the need for any of those spreads? It just makes for a soggy sandwich.

If you like white, vinegary pus then knock yourself out. It's a pale substitute for butter though.

If there is tomato or cucumber then I agree. Cheese on it's own is too dry, so I like some chutney or pickle to contrast the cheese.

Well, you clearly have a strong aversion to it. I suppose this means that you don't ever have egg or tuna sandwiches?

The only egg sandwiches I ever eat are the very occasional fried egg and cheese butty that doesn't need mayo. Tuna Mayo? Rarely.

Buy it now! I don't know where you live but the best thing is to go down to Steveston and get from a commercial fishing boat. The runs have been really big this year and its predicted that we'll get another massive run which should take us into the third week of Sept. I'm sockeyeed out though and have been targeting the bigger Chinook lately.
