Fish Tanks etc
 

Still pondering the fish tank set up. Anyone out there with some ideas/expertise of species? WE are looking at a mid size tank 50-75 gallons. Tropical would be our choice.

Fishy friends go for it!!! (Not you Oink, I don't want to eat them)

Tetras,kissing gouramis, tiger barbs, leopard catfish to clean your bottom ( the tank that is) and of course I think Angel fish would be good choice for you :thumbup:

Just bought a posh new Japanese fillet knife so let me know when you get the fish and I'll pop round and test it out. ;)

I made a crackin'in good fish pie this evening with trout, prawn, and smoke salmon to smoke it up a little- Parmesan mash on top.... yum- you watch your trotters with that sharp knife:(

Going to do some more of my own smoking this year although I have to do it around a mate's place as the residents of my de facto assistant living facility get the right hump when you're smoking fish on the balcony for 10+ hours. I might try some lingcod or other in the ling family or other rock fish as I thinking they might make a nice addition to a winter fish pie. :thumbup:

Yeah, I was lacking a good thick white meat fish as I used the trout and there was a lot of it. I would have gone to the fishmongers but I was being lazy so used home smoke salmon- smoked fish really adds to fish pies. :thumbup:

Clown Loaches (I love these things, get a few and they play hide and seek)

Rainbows
Tetras
Mollies

Neon Tetras, but they can be short lived.

swordtails Watch out for babies with the last two, but if you have plenty of plants in the tank then quite a few will survive.

Angel fish, just 4 or 5 in the tank and you will be amazed just how big they do grow, they might even breed as long as they are the only fish in the tank, and it's fascinating to see them looking after the eggs and babies.

Just steer clear of any of the barbs, they are very aggressive to other fish and will nip their fins.


Make sure your tank has been set up for a few days before adding fish, have the plants in there, but not the fish for a few days, also be very wary of adding snail eggs when you buy the plants.

we have a little tank that was bought for the daughter as she wanted puffer fish, unfortunately here in NZ you are restricted what fish you can have. We got her some miniature puffer fish and some bottom feeders, we lost all 3 puffer within 18mth but the bottom feeders have been going strong for the last 2 years. Keep thinking we would restock but then OH wants a sea horse tank as well as his salt water one but its very difficult to keep them going.

I have always had fish in my life as my dad had tank when I was small, all the fish mentioned are good but be careful with what you mix with what. The shop should be able to tell you what is likely to get on well with others. As also said you do need to get the tank up and running for a while before putting the fish in so the water and plants can acclimatise. You will also need a go aerator and places for the fish to hide/sleep.
Cat fish and red tail sharks are both bottom feeders so will keep the bottom and glass clean. but make sure you also buy a cleaner and glass scrapper.

Make sure that you don't over stock the tank or stock to full capacity in one go, take at least 6mths to fully stock as will keep the pollutants down.

We have a diamond goby. A resilient fish. It recently leapt out of the tank, fell 5' or so (15-20 goby lengths) landed amid the paraphernalia behind the tank and took a few minutes to find. I scooped it up, threw it back in, and on it goes.

This is in a 75 gallon bow front tank my daughter donated when she emigrated. A free fish tank is as economical as a free horse or a free Ferrari.

Golden barbs are non aggressive. Clown loaches but you need a group of at least 3. Bristle nose plecs( they love cucumber)
Zebra danios.
Don't add too many at once and be patient when the tank is initially cycling.
