First new extravagance since being here!

Right really excited. Always wanted a nice flat screen TV so we went out and got one on Satrurday and its sooooo cool.

Have linked up the pc / surround sound etc and set the screen saver to come on and scroll through random pics so we kind of have a changing photogallery too! (Has music in the background as well)

Just need to get a wireless keyboard and mouse now and we're all set. It is so weird though seeing your emails that big tho

Its a Toshiba 42HL167 42" HD LCD and it kicks ass, I feel like a kid with a new bike :o

Well done - think we may have the same one. Great TV - only there's not a lot to watch on it!

Believe it or not don't have cable as am not a huge tv watcher, didn't even have a tv back in England and everyone thought were strange! (how can you get by without Eastenders  ) Its mainly for DVDs and now as a photoframe :o

Its a weird feeling as we've never really been extravagant on ourselves so even though we can afford it - I still feel guilty.

Mr MMC is in his element - the remote control is huge :sneaky:

Wooo cool. That's very tech-savvy of you. Is the text etc readable on your LCD telly? I've seen media centre PCs hooked up to bog standard screens and it's terribly blurry. My grfx card can cope with my 20in LCD monitor but don't know if it'd drive the resolution needed for a 42in monster without turning me into mister magoo after a few hours sending emails/msn messages.

Ooooh I'd love to answer this knowledgably but all I know is that it works! We only brought the laptop over and thats what its hooked up to so will be getting a tower and doing it properly (hence the need for wireless keybord and mouse at present).

I think we just fiddled about with the settings in the graphic card from the control panel and hey presto

Although I now think I've created a monster  as Mr MMC is now playing with recording software (which he has absolutely NO idea how to use ) to try and get Ferrari F1 engine sounds and other car type sounds over some songs that he likes (so mixing really) and then get them to come on with the screensavers (they are all cars, bikes and trucks btw ). Were up til bloody midnight listening to the same song and the same engine sound trying to be overlaid.:(

You'd probably want to make sure you get a TV that can do 1:1 pixel mapping:

http://pixelmapping.wikispaces.com/

a lot of TVs (like mine) don't do this. Which is fine for most content like films, etc, but if you want to read computer generated text, it can look a bit off. Of course, the bigger the text is, the less you notice this.

Basically 1080p is the best. Next is 720p, then 1080i.

1080i (interlace mode) is not as good as it only has 540 horizontal lines. It's like first reading all the odd lines of this mail, then the even lines, then using temporal perception to put it all together (or something).
