Firewood in Calgary
 

What would you expect to pay for 1/3 chord firewood delivered in Calgary? Any views on whether it's worth paying the premium for certain timber species? This is for use in an old style (and not very efficient) fireplace not a new type wood burner.

$50 apparently.

Id stick to dried seasoned hardwood (ash, poplar, birch etc), less creosote deposition, more heat and burns for longer than softwoods like pine etc.

That's for a third of a face cord, about 3 logs. I paid $320 for a cord this autumn, not in Calgary admittedly, but I should think a $130-140 would be closer to the mark for an actual 1/3 of a cord.

The "truckload" seems to be a more uniform unit of measure...

It's a long time since I've had a house with an open fire. When I started a fire for the first time in this house it took a few moments for the smoke to go up the chimney - we had smoke emerging out of the top of the fireplace opening and into the room. Does that sound like the chimney needs cleaning? Possibly I used too much smokey kindling? I take it Calgary doesn't have any smokeless fuel rules?

There is a vent in the chimney which I opened and could see light above so that's probably ok. It's a bit dirty an I doubt it's been cleaned for a year or two. I noticed after the fire was finished there is a hinged plate in the hearth. Is this meant to be opened before the fire is lit to provide the incoming airflow for the draft? There is a little hinged door on the outside of the chimney - is this to do with the draft air or to collect ash from?

What do you mean by a nuisance burner? Are there certain times/days when you can't used the fire?

If there's a metal door on the outside of your chimney, then the hinged plate could be a way of getting rid of the ashes to the outside.

Nuisance burner - car tires, animal carcases (or parts therof), painted lumber, unseasoned wood, resiny wood, wet wood or anything that creates nasty smokes and smells.

A positive benefit of the Pine Beetle's activity in BC means a dump truck load (approx 5 cords) is $500 here.

I'm about 3 hrs north of you and birch is $350 a cord (by far and away the best to use). Ive seen it advertised on Kijiji for well over $500 a cord in Calgary :eek:
