Re: From fires to floods
Dikes in Abbotsford with help from the military will begin attempts are reapairs.
Levee that will be approximately 2.5 km in length will also be built, could result in 12 property owners losing their property, and could also affect highway 1. One of the dike breaches is 330 feet wide. No estimate on how long it will take to build levee, they are attempting to build it to stop water from going over highway 1, up to 100mm rain expected next week. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/army...kes-abbotsford Update: People who watched the live news conference reporting they said during the conference the levee will be built on Hwy 1 as its already elevated, from roughly the mushroom farms to No 3 exit. Still waiting to see if CBC reports the news conference, nothing that I see on their site yet. |

Molson Brewery in Chilliwack has donated 100 tonnes of grain/s as well. 4 people still missing in a landslide that pushed cars off Highway 99 near Pemberton. Hoping highway 3 will reopen by end of the weekend, highway 7 is open to commercial traffic only but they escorted 1,000 passenher vehicles out of Hope who had been stranded there. Government seeking fuel purchase agreement with Washington and Alberta due to the trans mountain pipeline being down still. BC may implement a ban on travel in the coming days. Port of Vancouver backing up due to no rail access to the rest of Canada, most of what comes into the port goes east, so might get interesting, wonder if they will need to redirect some of these ships south, can get unloaded in the US, put on transit to lines that connect to Canada further east. Work on the levee begins first light, 6-12 properties will be flooded but they have no choice at this point as the eastern end where the lake was continues to fill with water up to the roofs of barns. https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...-from-disaster |

Province confirms the Coq (highway 5) even the temporary repairs will take months to complete, province is seeking Bailey Bridges from throughout North America.
Winter will hamper repair efforts and even getting the heavy machinery in will require some outside the box thinking. https://globalnews.ca/news/8385471/r...ning-timeline/ |

Re: From fires to floods
It's a little extra time isn't it?
Some reports on reddit of people sharing their experience with getting across the border without passports, obviously case by case basis but several posts of people being successful with little issue crossing without a passport, seems as long as they can confirm your eligible for entry to the US, the US side is being pretty flexible understanding the situation north of the border. As of yesterday evening province estimates there were approx 17,000 people stranded away from home still. 120 Canadian Armed Forces members in Abby, with another 350 on standby in Edmonton if needed. 2.2 million litres a minute of water the pumping station is doing, and it's still not enough. I presume if they are building on a levee on part of highway 1 this will delay any reopening of that stretch of highway. |
Re: From fires to floods
Whatcom County (the county in Washington State that borders BC/Abbotsford) is warning people in flood areas of asbestos exposure due to naturally occuring asbestos on Sumas Mountain.
"As that material breaks up and is partitioned and carried as sediment downstream, the asbestos material comes out and is suspended in the water and is carried downstream and distributed around the landscape when the creek floods," Matthews said. https://www.king5.com/article/news/l...c-48eac7d2b24f Milk shortages are starting to pop up, saw a sign at McDonald's saying they can't currently offer milk or cream for coffee, with so much of the milk farms out of comission, not a surprise, there is very little milk being produced at the moment, and being a perishible product its not exactly stock piled at dairy processors for weeks of backstock. 61 poultry farms that are currently in the impacted flood area that produce meat chickens, eggs and baby chicks to replenish the population, casualties are expected to be high once farmers are allowed in to assess the damage. Average size for a meat poultry farm is 50,000 birds, of the 61 farms in the impacted area, 41 are in the highest risk/most affected areas. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/bc-f...g-farm-rescues |

BC working with the federal government to truck and barge more fuel by truck and barge from Alberta, Washington state, Oregon and possibly California. 2,000 fine for travelling into the restricted area for a non-essential reason. https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2021/1...-restrictions/ The article lists those exempt from the fuel rationing. The rationing is on the honor system, appears they think people will do the right thing and it's per visit not per day or per week, so you could just station hop if you really want more while still following the rules. |
Re: From fires to floods
Unfortunate 3 more deaths have been confirmed in the highway 99 landslide, one man is still unaccounted for according to BC Coroner and all attempts to locate him have been unsucessful.
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/high...ide-death-toll Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General said Saturday morning they have asked the federal government to remove PCR testing so people can go to the US if necessary for gasoline. "Farnworth adds he has asked the federal government to get rid of the PCR test requirement so people in BC could head across the border to fill up on fuel, without needing a COVID-19 test." https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/take...s-bc-essential One farmer lost 40,000 chickens. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...arms-1.6256171 Poor dogs, some dogs were killed when a dog boarding businesses flooded, the owners couldn't get to all the dogs in time, they went from okay to flooded in under 15 minutes. https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...doggie-daycare |

Re: From fires to floods
atmospheric river coming in through the weekend, this time in Northern BC, it's expected to weaken before it gets to the South Coast on Monday.
"forecast to bring between 100 and 150 millimetres of rain to Prince Rupert, with between 30 and 90 millimetres in other coastal areas." "Snowfall warnings were also in place for a large swath of northern B.C., including the Prince George and the Stuart-Nechako areas." "flood watch for the North Coast, including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Hartley Bay, Kemano and surrounding areas." |
Re: From fires to floods
A "parade of storm" is headed towards BC.
According to Environment Canada Meteorologist Armel Castellan, another atmospheric river is on the way, expected to arrive November 23, and depending on area anywhere from 40mm to 100mm rain is expected, than on Saturday another atmospheric river is expected bringing more rain, neither are expected to be as wet as the one that set off the flooding, but already saturated ground this is still not a trivial amount of rain either. Into next week more rain is expected. Typically BC only receives a couple atmospheric river's in a fall, we have seen a lot more this year than normal. |

Re: From fires to floods
Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Abbotsford set to reopen at 2pm, drivers should expect reduced speed limits, people are asked to stay off the highway however unless necessary.
Commercial vehicles over 63,500 kilograms are prohibited from using the Chilliwack to Abbotsford section at this time. https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021TRAN0075-002262 CP has resumed limited service between Kamloops and Vancouver with a train arriving in Vancouver with grain & fuel. CN had also hoped to reopen limited service today, however they have now said due to new weather related problems they will not be able to. Looks like the goal is to have commercial traffic back on the Coquihalla by the end of January, pending weather and temporary fixes of course. |
Re: From fires to floods
The mail is going through; my expedited parcel that was processed and in transit from Richmond on Nov 13 was finally scanned in Regina this afternoon, 12 days later (so I should get it tomorrow). I don't know what route it followed, but given the state of BC roads I'm not complaining. If it comes tomorrow it will be 8 days past when Canada Post predicted delivery, and 10 days past when I expected it originally. Expedited (ground transport) was the only option the shipper offered until the 14th or 15th, and then they started using Express Post but that was too late for my order.
edit; apparently my parcel was just here on a visit; easy come, easy go.: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...7cab12238f.jpg |
Re: From fires to floods
It's 45 minutes but well worth watching, everyone in BC really should watch this. |
Re: From fires to floods
The entire emergency system is too fragmented and patchwork to be effective, people were not warned, city's not warned, etc etc.
Why does the province download so much to local city governments who lack the resources? Some of this seems to stem back to the early days of BC Liberals. |
Re: From fires to floods
Abbotsford farmer loses his Saffron crops.
cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and carrots have also been significantly affected. 57 blueberry farms will apparently have to rip out all their plants and replant. Re: From fires to floods
More atmospheric rivers more problems.
Sumas, Washington reporting they expect some flooding between this afternoon and into tomorrow morning from the Nooksack, it's still expected to go over somepoint today, but looks like it's not forecast to be as bad as originally thought, they will sound the flood siren when time comes to evacuate. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...v-28-1.6265803 |
