Family winter pastimes
We're moving to Edmonton early next year and are obviously aware of the extremely harsh winters. We were just wondering, as one of the main advantages of our move to Canada is we will have much more family time together, what do people get up to during these cold months? Especially families? Is it just a case of staying in with the heating and the t.v on or do people get out and about? As we will be keen to explore our new surroundings

put the kids into winter sports (adults can participate), normally though, adults doing the winter activities of dealing with inclement weather, work, shopping, domestic duties, chores. Saturday night is a case of 24 watching a hockey game - pizza at some point along the line. Sunday sleep in, unless you have to drive the kids to hockey practice - then shovel some more snow 2 - 3 times the same day. Throw in a movie somewhere also. By Sunday night you'll be totally knackered to do anything else.
As you can see it much the same as living in the UK weekend routine, just snow instead of rain - rain of course there is no need to shovel it

collectively digging yourself out of your drive way/street
lots of fun for all the families.
I actually really enjoy winter and snow but I do have a covered parking spot

I believe in Edmonton, you spend the winters, isolated, staring across the living room into your partners face, wondering what the hell you’ve done while you slowly hardened your livers in a vain attempt to find a flicker of emotional warmth to ameliorate off the overwhelming alienation and homesickness. Or you go skiing and ice-skating.

I bet it's a lot cheaper than watching the (usually) fantastically crap Maple Leafs. They are, admittedly, off to a good start this year for the first time in my 31 years in the GTA.

They (Leafs) are actually playing close to form. They're more often in a playoff spot at this stage than not (in the past decade or so). Unfortunately it's the positions after 82 games that count...not after 10 or 15.

It's too early in the season for hockey to be terribly exciting or to predict what will happen (apart from Edmonton staying where it is in the standings).
It was quite amusing to watch the Sens/Red Wings game. It was Alfie's first game in Ottawa since defecting to Detroit after more than a decade as the Sens captain. All the money was on an easy Detroit victory. I don't think Alfie was very pleased at losing 6-1.
