Default Excuse me?

"Parts of the UK saw a flurry of snow overnight at the start of a wintry weekend that could see temperatures plummet to -5C (41F)."

The Guardian clearly failed in O-level maths.

I would have expected that sort of journalism level from the Daily Mail. Often times, UK news media weather scare stories talk about arctic conditions of -2 c which in reality is in an isolated area of the Highlands where few people live.

Whoever wrote it probably used google to convert and forgot to include the - symbol in front of the 5....

I know. It's fairly hilarious, coming back from Toronto, to see headlines proclaiming that it might be frosty tonight in the "high" parts of North Yorkshire.

At present, the weather in Newcastle UK is about the same as the GTA

Yes, as it usually is in November. But the two climates diverge dramatically from about now until about mid May. Then they cross over again and it becomes intolerably hot and humid in one but not the other.

I thought this was going to be a Hendrix thread.

It is suddenly bloody cold though. The 4C 'almost freezing' light came on in the car today.

I've got the same in my car..a VW. The first time I heard the sound I thought my seat belt wasn't on. 4 C is too far from 0 c to start the warning at.

You have an almost freezing light on your car? Never heard of such a thing.... Interesting, what purpose does it serve exactly other then telling you it's cold?

Bit chilly here as well, and looks like next week more cold, but upside is there is supposed to be a lot of sunshine....

It's the temperature at which the urea solution's vapour pressure is too low to fiddle the emissions test.

Ha ha..good one but I've got a gasoline version.

To JSmith...it is a silly warning but it comes on at + 4 c I think with a little snowflake symbol next to it. What is with the degrees fahrenheit webpage.....with cm and mm precipitation values as well.

I change the temp to F so as to not have to go and then convert it from C, saves me a step. Other then 0 being freezing, C temps don't make much useful sense to me to decide how cold or hot it actually is.

Hard to adjust sometimes from what one knows and grew up with and used for the first 25 or so years of life.....

I wasn't concerned with the precipitation amounts, so didn't change it over, but I do the same if I want to know how much snow or rain we are actually going to get as 5mm means nothing to me, I have to convert it.

(I grew up in the US, so metric was not used in day to day life, nor taught by the time I was in school in the mid 80's to mid 90's as by then it was clear the metric change wasn't going to happen.)
