Ex-rental car

I'm looking to buy an older car and found one which seems to drive well but according to the car proof it was used as a rental in Fort McMurray for a year. Should I keep looking?

If it is 'older' (how old?), then it's early life doesn't make a lot of difference.

What does the CarProof say about accident damage?

Not sure I would buy one that was used in Fort Mac, might have been abused a bit more then a normal rental would have.

I have an ex-rental, and have in the past and never had issues, and they all came with their maintenance records and such, but Fort Mac might be a little too abusive an environment for my liking.

(this is assuming its not been sold and used elsewhere in between.)

On the plus side, it's probably been properly maintained. On the downside, drivers will have thrashed the nuts off it. Oh, and check for used nappies stuffed under the seats.

Used to know a guy who wroked in a rental place in Florida, and he had some good stories about the condition some of their cars came back in. Apparently it's a good idea to take the car to a car wash before returning it if you've just been driving it through the sea...

Car is 7 years old with average mileage for the age. Looks like it spent it's first 18 months in Fort Mac and covered around 40000km in that time. No accident damage according to car proof..... Not sure about the service / maintenance history.

Oh, if it's been owned privately for six years since it was a rental, and has a service history, I wouldn't be too worried... if something was going to break because of the way it was driven, it probably already did.

The car's already taken a depreciation hit but is the rental history likely to affect selling it in the future? I'm only planning to keep it for a year or two so want to be sure I can offload it when the time comes.

Like they say "The best off road car is a rental car" !!! So buyer beware

Highway miles good, city miles not so much - look for excess wear on the brake and gas pedals.

Re: Ex-rental car

I don't think the rental history is a concern but I would attach no value at all to the Carproof report. In the time I had the Beetle it had about $35,000 in collision repairs, only one instance appears on the Carproof report, the bash with the deer that wrote the car off; it appears as "scratch on bumper".

It's in everyone's interest (except the next purchaser) to omit or understate accidents and so that's what happens.
