I don't think he did suffer for too long, he was hit on the side of the head and his neck seemed broken. The other cat must have known what happened, heard him perhaps? She was in the sunroom cowering on the floor. When I picked her up she was shaking. She keeps looking at the chair he used to sleep on, and she paces up and down. There's a gap that needs to be filled.

I went into the vets to cancel an appointment and they have kittens in there, one of them looks just like Dude at that age, :( that was sad, but there is another one we could have. A grey and white girl cat.

So thanks for your messages and commiserations. It is sad, but he did have a fun and happy short life.
