Re: Drivers, horns and road rage.

I don't think I've ever blown the horn in my car deliberately. I've set it off by accident trying to unlock the car and that irritates me (as well as everyone within earshot). If other people want to drift into the barrier or into each other I've no need to busybody them. I could happily do without the horn and especially without car alarms; they're as useless as an automatic toilet.

Something I'm really enjoying about driving an older car is that it doesn't have buzzers and horns inside the car. It doesn't tell me that I have no seat belt on, I know I have no seat belt on, it doesn't tell me that a door is a jar, I know what a door is. I can drive to California with the handbrake on if I so choose, the car doesn't nag me. I can even turn the lights on and off at will (it took a while to stop playing with that). I wish I could have all this in the winter car.

Re: Drivers, horns and road rage.

Part of the road rage issue in Vancouver is the poor design of the roads and intersections and lights.

A few simple things would get traffic flowing better in Vancouver.

1) Don't allow street parking on major arterial roads, no use having 3 lanes when one is blocked by parked cars most of the day, and the left lan8e is the defacto turn lane since a large amount of intersections don't have dedicated turn lanes for left turns, only leaving the middle lane that isn't blocked by something.

2) Dedicated left turn lanes.

3) Adding left turn signals.

4) Timing the lights to work together so keep traffic flowing.

Vancouver is already short of space, where would all the displaced vehicles park? Although if parking fees were doubled, maybe more folks would use transit.

2) Dedicated left turn lanes.
Lanes would be lost or road widened, not enough room to widen roads, a dedicated turn lane would take out a through lane.

3) Adding left turn signals.
Advance signals may work, but only if the lane was a left turn only. So through traffic funneled down into one through lane on most of Vancouver's arterial routes.

4) Timing the lights to work together so keep traffic flowing.
This would help the through routes, but snarl up the cross streets, some of which are also major arterial routes. either N-S or E-W.

Getting rid of the cycle lanes would help a bit. Congestion charges for non commercial traffic and exemption for one vehicle per household for residents in the congestion zone. Substantial parking tax, which could be used to subsidize transit.

I've just been in Houston, TX for 2 weeks - never seen so many angry black women driving bigass SUVs, throwing cups of water at other vehicles.

Ah, the peaceful Caribbean! Just about the only time we use our horns here is to thank other drivers for letting us into the traffic-line. Nice.
