Drive right except when passing
BC upping the fine + 3 penalty points.
Left-lane hogs in B.C. to receive higher fines - British Columbia - CBC News My question is when in the city and the traffic is above 50, but the right lane is packed and can't handle all the cars will cops give tickets for driving in the left lane? |

Re: Drive right except when passing
The article says it will only apply to multi-lane highways with speed limit over 80kms. About time.

Re: Drive right except when passing
Now we need to see it enforced. Many other driving infractions, such as not signaling are rarely enforced, so I wonder if this will be?

They did put up pretty new signs though. They seem to be working a bit considering how many cars refuse to move out of the right lane to allow traffic to merge when the left lane is completely empty causing the merging traffic to stop on the shoulder to wait for a clearing. |

Re: Drive right except when passing
They need to heavily fine people who pass on the right if the traffic is moving faster than 50kph, that way if there is a lane hog, other drivers will soon get them moved.

When I lived there, I was that prat. Great feeling. |

Do it like they do on the German autobahn. If you hog the lane, some prat in a big Merc is right behind you flashing lights and sounding the horn.

Had a big Merc 280 SE. Doesn't feel fast in a big car. In Ottawa I find I can't drive so aggressively. Most drivers go around like zombies here. They just tend to get in my way more often than not.

Re: Drive right except when passing
This is an education/training issue, not a policing issue.
To be honest, I'm sick and tired of seeing the police do little else but sit by the side of the road waiting to fine people for driving infractions. Policing should be a public service, not a source of revenue. Note- i do use proper lane etiquette. |

But does the punishment fit the crime in this instance? The fine and points for left lane hogger is same as that for "texting while driving" Are these two infractions deemed equal in their risk? Also looking at the exhaustive list on ICBC it seems "failure to stop for police" carries less penalty and running a red carries same penalty. I would put both these way higher up the scale than sitting in the left lane too long, particularly in a country where overtaking on the right is still permissable |
