Re: Do you respect the police?
We were burgled in Toronto, I didn't call them. My car was vandalised very many times, I didn't call them. I've been assaulted warranting minor stitches, I didn't call them. I suppose there might be some extreme case where I'd think they could help but it doesn't come immediately to mind; once a crime has been commited they can't help with it and inviting them into your life just invites trouble.
I get very many traffic tickets and I have to say that the police are unfailingly polite but, irritatingly, they nearly always lie about the penalty for the offence. Usually they say that there are no points involved, when they must know that there are. Sometimes they say that they don't know. I suppose this is to stave off begging.

I too have not bothered calling the police for minor incidents - such as my car being broken into. I realistically know there is little they can or will do - especially in Vancouver. However, its one thing to say you have no faith in the police, and quite another to say that you are afraid of them. I really can't accept that you are afraid of them.

I respect the Police as they are a necessity to maintain law and order. They generally are good people doing a tough thankless job.
Are they perfect? Certainly not and I have had different experiences with different officers on both sides of the pond.
There are incidents like Hillsborough and Stockwell where decision making has not been the best but I certainly feel more reassured when there is a police presence around.

They are usually only as good as the last experience you had, be it good or bad. Its the same the world over and they are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job.
Some are good others are not so good and what we normally hear about is the bad.I had a crap experience with a cement finisher, doesn't mean i hate all cement finishers!!
Why feel intimidated by police chomping on donuts? You must look further than the uniforms.Would you feel intimidated by a bunch of plumbers chomping donuts? I guess we all have preconceived ideas!!

And those red coats and silly hats are very camp.
Does this also apply to the Horse Guards?

I'm not afraid for my life, I don't fear violence from the police. What I fear is the arbitary application of power. If, for example they were to come to my house, perhaps in response to my reporting a burglary, I'd be concerned that they'd prosecute me for something or other they happened to notice while visiting. I fear that engaging with them is only going to cause me trouble and so I'll go a long way to avoid dealing with them.

I'd be interested to hear how you differentiate "left wing" and "socialist" but surely avoidance of the mechanisms of the state is a right wing or libertarian stance, not a socialist one. Individual police officers may hold right wing views but police forces as a whole are statist; they strive to bring about conformity and compliance. It's Ronnie Biggs who is a hero of capitalism while Harry Callahan is more a hero of the revolution; Che in a check suit.

If you are not doing something wrong, you have nothing to be worried about. I think you need to act your age and not your shoe size.

My garbage is mine whilst on my property, and the waste companies once it's deposited at the kerb.
