Default Demerit points Ontario

Good Morning Folks,

My wife suffers from a heavy right foot!! On one particular bout of this problem it involved being pulled over by the OPP and she received a fine and two points.
Do these points carry over onto her British licence when we return home?
Will it affect her insurance?

Regards

#unimpressedhusband

Speaking as a non driver who doesn't have a clue in these matters, I often see the expression exchanging UK licence for a Canadian one. Presumably vice versa?

Giving one up for the other because you can't hold both. There's a certain sense in transferring the licence including any penalties isn't there? Otherwise, what's the point? If it was simply about not being able to hold both, why not just make a Brit one valid?

Is it that you don't get UK penalties carried over to the Canadian licence as well? What happens if you return to the UK and exchange again, no points on the Canadian one so no points on the UK one, or do they reinstate the points that were on the UK licence when you left?

AFAIKT there is only reciprocity for traffic violations between Canadian Provinces, not between Canada and any other country.

Offences committed in nearby States result in points on an Ontario license. I don't know what the current spread of reciprocal point posting is but PA and VT offenses certainly apply and UT ones do not.

This is going back to 2009, but when I exchanged my Ontario license for a UK one, I didn't have to disclose any kind of driving history. I was not insured to drive a vehicle in the UK, I only exchanged the license for ease of having a UK ID, but still, was not asked for any driving history in the license exchange part of the process. Can't speak for whether insurance would ask for a Canadian driving history or not.

Now that you mention it, I think I head that NY and NJ have reciprocity with some nearby Canadian provinces.

I've switched by UK license for an Ontario one twice.

In 2004 when I had 6 points and here they counted for nothing and again in 2010 when I had 3 points which again counted for nothing.

Similarly they can't catch up with you in the UK over unpaid parking tickets either.

Bit extreme, though, moving to another continent to have points disappear.

one of the things that pissed me off about the UK was the police hiding with their speed guns to shoot ordinary people for easy revenue.

Ontario some years back conducted a study and proved out that the exercise was revenue generation and not saving lives.

9 years driving in the UK and I was done for speeding 4 times. 9 years driving in Canada and I’ve never been done for speeding.

1. Enforcement in the UK is more intense

2. Real culprit regarding your speeding tickets there I would respectfully suggest is your right foot.....

3. Reason speeding is so rife here in Ontario is quite simply lack of enforcement.....raise the likleyhood in the average drivers mind that he is likely to be nicked, speeding becomes less of a problem....that was my conclusion having spent a number of years on the right side of the radar.....you pays your money, you takes your chances, no one to blame but yourself, which I accept must be annoying.

P.S. I have been nicked twice for speeding in over 50 years of driving, once in the UK and once here. As the Led Zeppelin track title suggests "Nobody's fault but mine".

Also low speed limits, there's no reason for straight multi-lane rural roads to have a limit of 50mph. hence all the traffic moving at 65.

I exchanged my NJ DL for an Ontario DL. Had to get a driving record from NJ DMV.

I think all provinces and states will exchange licenses (from other states and provinces) if you move, but I don't think that necessarily means that points will be reported to the state/ province where your license came from.
