Re: Curry - in Canada?
Butter chicken is the Canadian equivalent of chicken tikka masala.
Creamy and tomato saucey with chicken. |
Re: Curry - in Canada?
i had a look online it says butter chicken originated in New Delhi..that famous suburb of Regina?
|
Re: Curry - in Canada?
Ack, I confess, I knew all along that butter chicken as served in Canada has its origins in a dish originally created in India. I contend however that the removal of the flavour makes the Canadian variation a different dish, in the same way as Chicken Tikka Masala is a British dish, not an Indian one.
I know now and, indeed, knew all along, that there is no tradition of exporting culinary creations from prarie provinces. Butter Chicken isn't typically trucked from Regina. |
Re: Curry - in Canada?
Anybody that lives in Durham Region or GTA. Theres a great authentic Indian restaurant in Pickering called Mount Everest. Always very busy so I advise you to book ahead :) Closest to the UK Ive found!

Just a thought but does anyone know of import restrictions on spices, curry powders etc? Or can they be purchased within Canada?
Any restrictions from USA to Canada? Will research. Thanks Vicky |

All easily purchased in Canada. Well, at least in some parts of Canada.

Re: Curry - in Canada?
Go to an Indian supermarket, they have every spice you'll need and big bags of rice for very little. Plus, you can get lots of English brand stuff at a fraction of the prices the English shops charge.

Not bad when we went there....it's not actually Pickering, more like Ajax. There is also locations on Bloor (Toronto) and Eglington

It's in Pickering village, which is in Ajax. Pickering town is a different place.

Are you sure those restaurants aren't franchises? It is in Pickering though. You assumed Pickering town. People who know the area understand. |

Re: Curry - in Canada?
A good place for UK like curry is bansaree in St Catherines. I'll admit it's the closest to the UK style I've personally come across.
A few others I like: Kama, and Aroma, both in downtown TO. Coriander Green in Oakville Everest Cuisine in Etobicoke (used to be my regular place when I was in TO) Bombay on the Lake in Etobicoke My fave has to be Shala-mar on Roncenvalles. Khalid the owner is great guy, always welcoming and friendly. We hadn't been there for a couple of years and he instantly remembered us. Food is excellent, especially the beef passanda. I'm not a big beef curry guy, usually stick to chicken, but when the passanda is this good, it's hard to resist. |
