Crazy Critter Competition

3 Attachment(s)
Alright guys does anybody know what the Critter of the day is, it was taken at Horse Shoe Canyon, Drumheller. There were loads of them and they made holes in the ground?

So far I've had:

Yellow Bellied Marmot

Ground Squirrel

Gopher

Ground Hog

Wood Chuck

So what do you guys think it is?

Gopher.

And I know what my neighbour would say if I saw one: "do you want me to shoot it?"

Btw ground hog and wood chuck are the same animal.

Looks kind of like a prairie dog (at least I think it does - i've only ever seen on in a zoo!)

Re: Crazy Critter Competition

yup definately a gopher and whilst they look cute they are a pest and are also very stupid.

There was a time only a few years back that kids were being offered x amount of cents per gopher tail by local councils as they are that much of a nuisance.

It is considered an inherent redneck passtime to shoot gophers for something to do when you're bored

We've found using a tank of propane and length of hose puts them to sleep quite effectively. Add a flame if you want additional entertainment.

If you own horses or cattle you can very easily do that.

These "cute critters" are a real danger to large animals. :frown:

Spot on Steve - the holes they leave are the perfect size for a hoof/leg to disappear down. When you're charged with taking care of a horse someone's invested $100k in, gophers' rights come a distant second place. Gassing them is about as humane a death for them as is practicable. Toasting them in the process is purely optional.

Re: Crazy Critter Competition

Pour lots of water down their holes then as they jump out that when you shoot em.

Yup, commonly known as gophers around here. We were at Horseshoe Canyon last week as well, and there was a small girl with her arm stuck down one of those holes up to her elbow.

I told her: Oh you don't want to be stickin' your arm down there!
she says: I wanna get a gopher!! :frown:
I reply: Well be careful the gopher don't get YOU! :p:sneaky:
