Stunning, isn't it? It's what a command economy can do when it feels the need.
I thought they might be stretching a point until I read.."Wuhan is constructing a hospital modeled after the Xiaotangshan SARS hospital in Beijing, Wuhan authorities said in a Friday notice. The facility will be a prefabricated structure on a 270,000-square-foot lot, slated for completion Feb. 3.

The SARS hospital was built from scratch in 2003 in just six days to treat an outbreak of a similar respiratory virus that had spread from China to more than a dozen countries and killed about 800 people. The hospital featured individual isolation units that looked like rows of tiny cabins."
I don't doubt that whatever can be done, will be done to isolate this virus in China, but with so many traveling so far so fast worldwide, will other countries be able to step up to the challenge?
Imagine the logistics involved in maintaining services and supplies to a city of 11 million, imagine what would happen if a 'small' city like Vancouver were to be forcibly isolated, imagine the uproar, imagine the resistance, imagine the political arguments that'd paralyse any action.

It might happen with no need to imagine.

But then I'm probably being an alarmist.... or am I?

Give China credit when it comes to building stuff quickly they certainly can.

I have don't have much confidence Vancouver could handle a big viral outbreak well, our hospitals can barely handle normal flu season.

Sure they can handle a handful of cases well, but say 500, 1,200, 2000 people ill with a virus like this, I have no faith the system could handle it.

The NY Times is doing a live commentary, numbers of confirmed cases outside China to date (now)
◆ Thailand and Hong Kong have each reported eight cases of infection; the United States, Taiwan, Australia and Macau have five each; Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia each have reported four; France has three; Canada and Vietnam have two, and Nepal has one.
One of the Vietnamese people who have it has never been to China and has no close family who have either, which apparently is being taken as a sign that the virus doesn't require close contact to spread.

I'd be very seriously suggesting the conference is rescheduled, as I think it'd be too much of a risk for it to go ahead given the current circumstances.

First case confirmed in BC, man in his 40's who arrived in Vancouver region last week sometime from China, man is doing well and in self isolation at home, appears he put himself into self isolation on his return before showing symptoms.

https://www.vicnews.com/news/b-c-rep...couver-region/

Interesting article on the lack of preparedness in ON when it came to SARS, and how BC had a plan in place for pandemics and largely controlled the spread and only 1 healthcare worker ever catching it.

I am not sure the reasoning to keep that info secret, with 20 something flights a day to/from China + all the connecting possibilities, there is a ton of passengers each day arriving into Vancouver from China, which is why I was surprised its taken this long to have a confirmed case here.
