Very distressing.

It did seem logical that highly populated areas would be hot harder, I for one do not understand how it has been delayed, a new mutation? Why did the UK and the US get it so hard? Perhaps it is just a question of time before things even out.
Meanwhile in BC, I cannot drive to Vancouver but flights from India are still arriving. I really hope the passengers are quarantined for 14 days, we should be tough on arrivals from India right now.

UK put India on their red list but gave people a week to come in, where is the science in that?

2 planes per day arrive in Toronto from India. That should have been stopped a while ago.

Feds should just stop all international air travel to/from Canada for the time being, or raise landing fees to 1 million for international arrivals and have the airlines suspend service as airlines wont pay a 1 million landing fee.

Of the 20 international (including US flights) flights that originated outside of Canada currently on BCCDC exposure list, 14 are from Delhi.

The 39 cases of the variant from India reported in BC yesterday were actually from a couple weeks ago, with delayed reporting so its been here a couple weeks already at least.

Other odd thing about the proposed travel restrictions, is the plan is to just put signs up at the BC/Alberta border reminding Albertans not to travel to BC, you'd think they could just put some RCMP or send some BC sheriffs or conservation officers or commercial vehicle officers and turn people away.

Albertans wont get into the Lower Mainland most likely as they do appear to be planning check points in Hope, but Hope is still pretty far from Alberta.

Or you can just fly around BC, doesn't seem to be any plans to halt flying, but airlines are federal jurisdiction so guess province can't do anything there.

It does make you wonder just how much travel is essential as opposed to desirable.

I remember the early days of covid as the cases were announced. Travel related. Linked to prior cases...in other words also travel related.

I wonder what would have happened if the world had just stopped travelling. Goods transports excepted, other absolutely essential stuff to be done via chartered planes, because if it was that essential they'd pay. Immigration on hold... if they are that essential and employers pay relocation costs they can charter the plane too.
Perhaps do it like a car sharing system. If you want to fly in to NS and there are a dozen people 'needing' to be in Montreal, Toronto, whoever 'needs' you to be in NS buys you onto the plane going there and arranges for your onward transport.

Maybe by adopting such an approach everything would have been much more manageable and every couple of months open a travel window for one way journeys - so as to discourage non (or less) essential trips...just allow the immigration to go ahead, separated families to reunite, the stranded to return etc.

You have to wonder if life couldn't pretty much have continued, just without the travel, and we could have started vaccinating with fewer having died or getting long covid.

I would think the majority of my travel and that of people I know falls into non essential.

Love him or hate him, at least Trump had the balls to create travel bans for people flying from mainland China & certain European countries back in Feb/March 2020. If he did this in December 2019 it would be a completely different story now. Crazy how fast the virus spread once it hit Washington state.

Spoke to a pharmacy today where we were on a wait list, they had a couple extra doses, told them we already had ours, and they have over 800 people on their wait list.

Wasn't it the case that he only banned Chinese nationals flying from China? White people could come and go at will.

US border closure extended. The way things are looking in Canada is it the US that are now going to benifit the most from this continued closure?

I don't think he was that explicit with the color of their skin. It barred foreigners of all colors from entering the U.S. if they had recently been to China.

American citizens who were evacuated from Wuhan earlier that week would be quarantined for 14 days at March Air Reserve Base in Southern California. Something like that, feels like years ago now.

How can it have gone on this long and nobody's applied a solution? Easy to call it Fire Base Pt Roberts and chopper in the steaks and beer and take out the wounded, but why not have a closed bus allowed to run whoever wants to get back to Washington proper over the border? When I went to Old Mexico they had a nasty green bus with steel mesh over the windows, and that's what you rode from the aduena at Laredo to about 10 miles south of the border, where there was a modern bus waiting. I guess if nobody can get into Point Roberts and nobody can get out, nobody's going to give them covid.

From midnight tonight all flights from India and Pakistan are cancelled for 30 days. This includes cargo planes, except for those carrying PPE/vaccines.

Edit: In the last 2 weeks 32 flights have landed in Canada with at least 1 COVID positive passenger on each flight.
