This is the concern with my employer as well. As a regular WFH guy I know when lots of others are doing the same as the VPN slows down. While our St John's office is still open, head office in London is now closed until further notice. So that's another 600 people working from home. Monday is going to be interesting!

Re: Coronavirus
My house is always overstocked, I lived in far too many places where you saw something edible on a shelf and it disappeared never to be seen again...so I always have enough tinned products to withstand a fairly long siege. A habit I have tried, but failed to break...but it never involved toilet roll...my husband says this is all a scam by the loo roll manufacturers...he might be right...

Re: Coronavirus
I normally keep a good supply of all sorts of things. Mum never ran out of things..always made sure she had a good supply of essentials and things we liked. I suppose that’s what living through WW2 did to her. A week ago I went shopping but only for bits and pieces. I have ordered some things to be delivered by Loblaws, sometime next week. Since Wednesday we have self isolated because I am at high risk, We go out several times a day for a walk by the lake, it is very quiet down there, but we keep our distance. We can also take a drive out somewhere and perhaps if it’s a very quiet location, get out and walk. Anything delivered will be sprayed best I can and stored in a downstairs room for several days, in the hope that any virus will be killed.
Our daughter arrived home from the UK last week. She is self isolating for 14 days along with her 5 yr old daughter. They live about 50 yards away. Just been stood chatting by her gate, while they stayed the other side of their patio door. |

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51892477 according to this its getting serious now in Germany as 'Germany has reported 733 more cases - the national total now stands at 3,795, with eight deaths. Berlin has banned on all public and private events with more than 50 participants and forced the closure of all bars, cinemas, clubs, gyms, betting halls and brothels. Re: Coronavirus
I suspect Canada is a couple weeks behind the US, by end of the month I would guess we will see an explosion in numbers. Vancouver alone has dozen or so flights a day just from Seattle where 500+ people have it now, surely its at the airport spreading and being taken back to Vancouver at least a few times by now.
I am really worried about my mom, she and my nephew both work at the same casino but the casino has no plans to shut down, tribal sovereignty comes into the picture so state government can't force them to. My mom is high risk so I worry, but if she quits she can't collect unemployment and can't afford to not have income, tough situation for both of them. |
Re: Coronavirus
I agree with you re Canada J. The authorities should have battened down and fully sealed off the hatches several weeks ago.

Re: Coronavirus
People who do things like this should be heavily penalized. Some of this massive buying might not all be panic, people are taking advantage of the situation for their own gain. Stores of course can prevent this by limiting quantity, especially Costco with membership and tracking ability, 2 pack of toilet paper per week per membership. 2 packs should last most people over a month or 2.

Re: Coronavirus
9 more cases in BC, mostly centered around the same care home.
BC will be setting up testing locations, but stresses not everyone needs to be tested, and if your symptoms are mild to self isolate for 14 days. "testing will instead focus on existing clusters, people in hospitals, health-care staff, and long-term care homes, along with anyone who exhibits serious symptoms." "The minister asked people to not crowd those testing centres or area hospitals if they fear they’ve contracted the virus, saying people can self-isolate at home if they have mild illnesses." https://globalnews.ca/news/6677701/b...date-march-14/ |

There's always been people who profit in times of emergencies ............... they were known as profiteers  They usually get their come-uppance at some future date.
We want to buy 1 extra pack of 8 or 10 rolls of a certain brand of TP, OH hasn't seen any on the store shelves locally for 10 days. But he did come home laughing a couple of hours ago. He stopped in our Safeway/Sobeys to check once again ....... no TPs of any brand, but there were loads of packs of Royale Facial Tissues boxes on the next shelving unit, no other brands there. He said people were picking up a pack of the Royale, then putting them back on the shelf again "Too expensive" were the comments If you really need paper hankies you'll buy whatever is there, even if it the most expensive or the cheapest one that you can't stand! |

Re: Coronavirus
I have heard the most shocking tale of coronavirus deprivation. A colleague, returning from a day's skiing, stopped at her preferred grocery store (I assume Whole Foods) to find that there was neither lettuce nor fresh fruit on the shelves. She's to be back on the slopes tomorrow (no queues, parking near the lift) and wonders what to eat in the meantime. Oakville, I surmise, now resembles Beirut.

from what I read non of the acts cover self isolation. They allow the province or federal government to designate a quarantine centre and quarantine an individual there.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/vancouv...a9029f9f0/amp/ Henry said the requirement to self-quarantine for 14 days is voluntary but people who work for government and for schools could be ordered to stay home. (a)remain in a specified place, or not enter a place; So couldn't they order people to remain in self isolation at home? Public Health Act That article says its voluntary at the moment, doesn't necessarily mean it will stay that way further down the article: "“There are significant powers in that act to constrain people, should that be required,” Dix said. “The reason it hasn’t been used is it hasn’t been required because people have been very cooperative, and we hope they continue to be that way.”" "They can imprison or levy fines against people for offences such as the “failure to take steps to avoid transmission, seek advice or comply with instructions.” They haven't invoked the powers provided in the act yet, but whose to say they wont in the coming weeks? This article has this comment from the Premier. "But if it's necessary, Horgan said the province's public health officer does have the authority to enforce self-isolation on the public." https://bc.ctvnews.ca/covid-19-guide...tion-1.4852982 So seems to me while its honor system and voluntary today, public health officer does have the power to force self isolation if necessary. |
Re: Coronavirus
Vail Resorts, owners of Whistler / Blackcomb Ski Resorts, announced this afternoon that they were shutting down ski operations from tomorrow 15th march until next Sunday 22nd March. They will use the 8 days to reassess the situation and decide whether to re-open or close down. They will pay their employees during the 8 day close down.
Accommodations and properties will remain open for guests already registered but no new registrations will be taken. The strange thing is that W / B was assuring people this morning that the resort was open and would remain open. Then the announcement ski operations were closing down was announced less than 4 hours later.Spring break began yesterday here in BC, and many people had registered at Whistler weeks or months ago, while others made last minute decisions to stay in province. Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry was suggesting Whistler as a place to go during her noon news conference The closure affects all 34 Vail properties in North America .... there are 33 in 4 US states ...... but not the 3 they operate in Australia. |
Re: Coronavirus
Whistler Blackcomb management locally probably had not been advised by the upper management at Vail Resorts when they made that comment. A decision to close would have come from Vail upper management and not local management.
Looking into it a bit more it appears Vail is following recommendations from US health officials to close, and as they are also closing their head office except for essential employees, they likely found it easier to close everything rather than have some operating and some not, Colorado is forcing all ski resorts to close, so that likely played a role as well. Easier to close everything. I'll take a wild guess that the Australia resorts are possibly not open due to it being summer there still.
