I've heard these kind of theories before. I'm not a virologist so can someone explain to me why if community transmission of a particular strain of illness is so low, winter weather is going to suddenly cause it to reappear from nowhere like Frosty the Snowman?

I'm not saying that additional precautions and due care shouldn't be taken, especially at the US border, I just think there are better ways of handling it that's all. Forcing someone into mandatory isolation when they've done nothing wrong and in some cases can be arriving from a place where the virus barely exists just seems a little bit cruel.

Dunno about that. Some Care homes and some workplaces aside, other spikes seem to involve people being out and about in situations where they may be more likely to be at home in the warm in winter.

With under 4,000 cases and 22 deaths, I'd paint Alaska a lighter shade.

In no particular order reasons why it may jump up. Aside from the stock its a flu like virus, flu is more prevalent in winter

1)virus has been shown to survive longer in cooler temperatures, and damp environments. Winter is cooler and damper

2) UV has been shown to kill the virus, less of that in winter.

3) people will be less likely to spend time outside at restaurants, bars etc. as temperature drops and will move indoors

4) Overall outdoor activities will be replaced by indoor activities (swap hiking for bowling, running outside for gym running, going the mall as a family outing etc).

5) People will brush covid off as a cold/normal flu - now the whole world ducks if someone coughs/sneezes, that'll subside in winter.

To be fair, the US/Canada isn't actually closed, it's restricted but not closed.

why is that "cruel"? Its two weeks to make sure you arent asymptomatic and bringing it with you for others to struggle with. I frankly agree with it, I think its why we are doing so well compared to other countries. It makes sense to me. Its not personal.

Well for one it's essentially saying that everyone from the outside world is potentially diseased isn't it. It's all a bit medieval when you think about it.

Anyway it looks like quarantine discussions are not for this thread however I'm more than happy to pick this one up in the other thread with you if you want to continue it.
