Rule of thumb here ---> http://gardentenders.com/topics/425 seems to come up with 19,000 lbs or just short of 9 ton

Thanks

Then make him do it , he seems to know what's right and wrong. You can go put your feet up and have a cuppa.

we had a load of screened topsoil (don't know if that's heavier, lighter or about the same as clean fill - or even if it's another term for the same thing) delivered a few years ago. 10 yards (one dumptruck load) was about 20 tons, IIRC.

This sounds like only half a question.

16.5 (cubic?) yards... of what?

Tons? Long ton, short ton or metric tonne?

Give us the whole picture... what do you exactly do you need to convert?!

Re: Convert tons to cubic yards....

Making an assumption on the density of ordinary backfill at 1,700kg/m3, I figure that:

16.5 cubic yard x 0.76 = 12.54m3

12.54m3 x 1,700kg/m3 = 21.32 metric tonnes (Canadian & modern UK measure)

alternatively,

21.32 metric tonnes x 1.1 = 23.45 short tons (US measure)
21.32 metric tonnes x 0.984 = 20.98 long tons (old UK measure)

Unlikely to be short or long tons. Those units are not much used these days. A long ton and a metric ton are near as dammit the same thing, BTW.

Incidentally, it is wrong to use the term 'metric tonne'. It is 'tonne' or 'metric ton'.

<coat, please>
