Confused about visa for vacation to Hawaii !

Confused about visa for vacation to Hawaii !
Dear All,
So we've had quite a crazy year & hope to get a deal to Mawai (flying direct from Vancouver - hopefully) before Chrimbo... My question is - do we need a visa etc etc?
We all became PR March 2011 & moved to Vancouver in June 2011. We have British passports and I know that we 'lose time' re: applying for citizenship but I'm unclear on what's needed to cross the border & re-enter...
I did try to search this but got allsorts of odd results

Should have said it costs $14 (IIRC) per person.

No, you do the ESTA application on the US customs and immigration website https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ for each person travelling and it's linked to your passport. When you go through US immigration in Vancouver the border guards can see the electronic visa waiver attached to your passports.

We changed our travel plans slightly & now I think I've made a stupid ESTA mistake...
We're going to drive from Vancouver BC to Seattle then fly from SEATAC to Maui. I've bought ESTAs for the whole family... But hubby tells me ESTAs don't work if we drive across border via Bellingham! Is that true? How do we get visas & can I get an ESTA refund?
