Coldest place on earth?

Around Edmonton, apparently so.
Worked all day in it and thought it a little nippy, picked up a wooden pitch fork un-gloved, stupidly, and my hand even stuck to that, new one on me

I would have thought Antarctica was colder than northern Alberta.

I would have thought so too but from what I can find it's a balmy -33 at their coldest station.

Ah, I see, you mean "currently". A bit long standing British tabloid tradition of claiming a hot summer's day as being hotter than Nairobi or something! Last time there was a discussion on this topic I think coldest actual temps being reported (by BE's in Canada) was about -56C. I think my record low is -37.

Antarctica is in the middle of the summer right now. The record is -89C actual, no idea when you include the windchill.

However, a co-worker told me that one time he was working up north (not sure exactly where) the local weather forecast said they couldn't give a windchill temperature because the table didn't go down that low.

If I remember correctly, the worst I've been out in is -44C actual and -54C with windchill.

Edit: interestingly, the table in the Wikipedia article on Antarctica's climate would class that as 'Condition 3: Pleasant conditions; all outside travel is permitted.'

My husband was working in Spence Bay and it was minus 47 with a 40 knot wind, he always tells me that it was that particular day that made him decide to leave Canada.....I'm not sure quite what caused him to decide to return:thumbup:

It's a bracing -32 here now, so I'll dress accordingly for the walk to work. The meteoroli... meteorolo... weather scientist on tv said it could be colder than normal right through Christmas.

Batsman says the coldest he has experienced is -60C. That was one summer in Antarctica. He played golf on an iceberg in -10C.

right now at home its sunny and minus 38 (without w/c) I'm about to go outside for another cigarette, it takes longer to get dressed and undressed than it does to smoke it :(

Mandy, I'm not anti cigarette....but whenever I see people in Canada outside in freezing conditions, I think they must be nuts...I am sure I'd just become a fair weather smoker...

I thought that was a cool comment, actually. Crisp sunny day with snow (a la AC's recent snap on the photo thread)...what could be better.

Have to admit, it was very pretty on Friday, stunning sunrise, beautiful ice crystals lke diamond dust shimmering in the air, then the most amazing sundogs later in the day!

Glad to look at it from a warm safe place though! ;)

-1 here at the moment.

Let's just say I'm a thoroughly unimpressed immigrant. Supposed to be snowing the rest of the week and down to around -10 which is far more interesting.

Had some reasonable amount of snow here today. Getting monies worth for the covered parking spot now.

The worrying part is that they do it 'routinely' :).

That said, I've done -40C in swimming trunks between the house and the hot tub, and it was no big deal. Wouldn't want to be out like that for three minutes, though.

Warm is actually probably more dangerous than cold in Antarctica; a co-worker was down there for a few years after he left university, and the only people who didn't come back were the ones who went for a hike in the summer and disappeared.

I guess the Shoggoths got them.
