CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Can anyone tell me why on the 12th November we have to then see all the Christmas lights. I appreciate that the town needs to get theirs out and on, it does look nice but does everyone have to follow suit in their homes.I know we have to put them out before the big freeze comes, which by the way seems to be this week, but why oh why do we need to turn them on. Scrooge here we come!!!!!!:frown:

Don't think there are any bylaws that state when you have to put Christmas lights up or turn them on. I believe you can decide for yourself. Or was it you feel your neighbours (some of whom may have been doing this for decades) should follow your sentiments?

I have seen quite a few houses with Xmas lights up all year long, they must be very merry people, or maybe just lazy.....;)

Thank you for your replies. No I love Christmas but think that every year it gets nearer to October when there is no need for it. Beginning of december is ok for lights and decorations and to get ready for the holiday season. I love having such friendly positive replies, so thank you once again!!!:D

I agree that Christmas starts earlier in the stores every year but when your doing things like outside lights, then seriously you would not want to be putting them up in weather like we have had this weekend where the wind chill is -30 and there is a foot of snow on the ground. Mush easier and nicer to do it at the end of season yard clean up time before the weather changes.

As a born and bred Canadian, I will now educate you people on what the deal is with Christmas lights in this country:

The general consensus is that anytime after the first decent snowfall past Halloween is game on. In Canada, Christmas lights aren't as much about Christmas specifically as they are a compliment to the changing of the season, snow, icicles, darkness....seasonal affective disorder, thoughts of suicide etc.

Personally, I think things would be much more clear cut if remembrance day was a stat holiday. :fingerscrossed:

It is in Newfoundland. The rule seems to be that Christmas lights can be put up after Remembrance Day as weather permits. I usually ignore the window of good weather and struggle putting them up in howling gales/snow/drizzle.

We put our lights up on Remembrance Day (only because it was a balmy 10 degrees).

We might switch them on about 1st December.

We usually put them up around 1st dec. We were out and about on some private land today that we have access to choosing the tree we would fell for Christmas! We'll have to cut it down in a couple of weeks time!!! Fun times ahead!!
