Christmas or Holidays

The adverts on TV in Canada keep saying, the Holiday season. To me that is School summer break not Christmas :(

Christmas is just that, Christmas, how can it be called the holiday season  Some Nurses, Fireman, Military and Cops to mention a few all work over Christmas so Holiday it is not, for them.

Christmas is Christmas and always will be, and the holy-day season includes Christmas.

Because you are in a foreign country and they use the language differently ;)
For holiday = vacation

Long weekends, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, -these are termed holidays. Got it??

(PS think of the word's origin- Holy Day)

oh I see what you are getting at. The old 'we aren't allowed to say happy Christmas anymore' gig.

Think of it as being more inclusive, not everyone is celebrating a Christian holiday so by saying Happy Holidays you are including everyone. If you are at church the Happy Christmas would be appropriate. Happy Hannukah at the synagogue etc.

Wikipedia has a list of December observances. "Night of the Radishes", the name appealed but the description of the event, well meeuh.

Last year I got told off in work for saying Merry Christmas, and the person went I`m Jewish so I said Happy Hanukkah They still had a moan.

Ugh customer service.

Ohh i suppose there is that point of view, but if that is the case, how do you explain Halloween being called Black and Orange day in some parts:confused: Halloween is a big Americana thing anyhoo, why change that.

FFS man. We haven't even finished with the annual poppy thread yet and you start the annual Christmas vs holiday crap.

Get a grip. I thought the best thing about Canada was the "proper" seasons?

Why not use both terms. Interchangeably. It is Christmas and for most there is a holiday period.

Since when has Christmas had anything to do with religion?
I'd have told him to go **** himself.

Since about 2012 years ago, I believe. Nevertheless, I share your sentiments.

I couldn't give a monkey's what it's called, or what superstitious old nonsense it celebrates - I get a few days off work and that's the best bit!!

Is it? Black and orange day? New one on me.

We've had cards saying "Season's Greetings" for a long time. Isn't that the same as Happy Holidays?

It's not really worth getting your knickers in a twist over though is it?
