Default children/toddlers ear piercing

Why?

One of the nurses at work was talking about this saying how cute it looked - which puzzled me.

How come you are allowed to pay someone to stick needles through a child's ear lobes? If it's a toddler or baby then the child is held down while two people pierce both ears simultaneously. That doesn't seem very kind.

I've never seen the appeal either. I have a terrible sensitivity to non precious metals. Although they don't always bring me out in a rash the itchy feeling can drive me nuts. Imagine an infant in that situation , itchy like crazy and no way to communicate it

Makes me cringe. Why would anyone put a kid through that pain for no reason other than fashion?

Yup left it up to my oldest to decide when she wanted hers done, wished i'd have put the foot down because now she has ears, belly button, tongue (twice) and the back of her neck

But ultimately shes old enough - I'll just nod and tell her i'm sure someone other than her loves them

OH has this. Can't wear silver, gold is OK as long as it is 21 + carat. Platinum no problem.

How convenient.

I agree with the trashy comment; I think it looks cheap. My daughter (9 years) was asking to have her ears pierced about a year ago. I told her she needs to wait until she's a teenager. However, we were in a shop where there happened to be a girl about the same age as her having her ears pierced. We stood and made my daughter watch. Having seen it being done and how much the girl in question was crying, my daughter has stopped asking now and said she doesn't want them done!

A lot of the little Italian girls have their ears pierced here. I think it looks pretty. I would have pierced my daughter's ears young but the OH doesn't agree, so we've agreed to wait until she's the age I was - 10. I wouldn't have pierced a toddler or baby due to risk of some other kid ripping the earrings out, but I think it's fine a bit older.

I don't see what's trashy about it though? Different cultures, different standards.

It's complete bollocks is what it is. You never hear of men being intolerant to ordinary metals - with women it's 100% in their heads.

and ear piercing toddlers is child abuse.

I had my ears pierced when I was away at college. Much to my surprise my mum remarked that she wished she had had mine done when I was tiny
I believe she thought it might have been less stressful or something, but I was quite happy to have waited until I decided I wanted to have it done!

A year or two after that she had her own ears pierced! (copy-cat!!)
