If Albert knows that Bernard doesn't know, the month can't be either May or June, since either of those contains a possibility of a unique date (May 19 or June 18). Therefore Cheryl's birthday is in July or August.
So Bernard knows it's in either July or August, and this is enough for him to determine when the birthday is. It can't be on 14th, because this wouldn't enable Bernard to choose between the two months. So we're left with July 16, Aug 15 or Aug 17.
Now back to Albert: he can deduce the answer given Bernard's previous answer. If the birthday were one of Aug 15 or Aug 17, Albert wouldn't be able to tell which. Given that he knows that Bernard knows the date and that this enables him to deduce the date, the only possible option is July 16.

Took me two tries. My first attempt I broke the logic halfway, but worked it out after a bit more playing with it.

Husband sent it to me. After my first wrong guess I just wrote back "Cheryl is a ****." That was not the right answer.

But I did get there in the end. And now my brain hurts.

Quite. Cheryl deserves a bloody good slap. No birthday cards for her this year, that's for sure (or possibly lots, all on different days).

Im not bonking Cheryl and she is not related to me or any member of my family so really who gives a shit when its her birthday.
How old will Cheryl be? what is she expecting for her birthday a doll house, a vehicle or just a quiet evening meal.

It is dead easy to solve in two simple steps.

1) Look at the opening post and decide that you don't want to use up the few functioning brain cells you have left.

I don't get it... don't understand Oakvillians explanation... Showed it to hubby who usually gets these things easily and he doesn't get it and (sorry Oakvillian) says it was a lucky guess....Can't figure out how you can make the first statement... :o
