Canada Post is likely the cheapest, never seen any of the private couriers cheaper when sending anything overseas, but I would call Canada Post rates low, just lower than private couriers.

If you know the approx weight and have the dimensions of the package, you can get estimates online from the various companies on their websites.

The trick with Canada Post is the thickness of the parcel, the dimensions of course are important but the prices seem to rocket the thicker the parcel. Look on their website to work out the best way to wrap it

discovered that it is almost cheaper to send 4 thin items than one consolidated parcel

I sent some diabetic test strips to my wife when she was in Montreal helping her mum after her dad died. In the little pot, the envelope was too wide for 'letter post' or whatever they called it and it was over $10. The next batch I wrapped in tissue, spread out so as not to be too thick, put it inside a card and it was a bit more than $1.

Canada Post is quoting 8 weeks surface and 3 weeks air atm. Just sent a framed picture 10x8 sort of size. It was a small fortune 30 odd bucks.

I believe the last time expired/expiring passports sent to the UK were discussed, it was about $27 with Canada Post (recorded/tracked) and about $80 with other couriers.
