Cat diabetes - help regarding insulin please

My cat has just been diagnosed with diabetes. As he is going to be started on insulin injections on Monday & I would like him to be started on an insulin that is easily obtainable and preferably reasonable in price too as I guess the pet plan will not be transferable and we will now have to pay for everything when we get to Canada in a couple of months.

Thanks in advance.

I think only a vet can really answer that question but anticipate it costing lots. Also anticipate spending lots of money on Bandaids.

I'd look into suitable pet insurance plans in Canada, or in your province of choice if such things are provincial. Get registered at a vet when you arrive and they should be able to make suggestions.

Worked in vet clinic for years here, insulin is cheap and needles too, don't panic

Pet insurance won't cover it any way, get a copy of all the blood work from your UK vet, so new vet here can see blood results. We have human insulin here and pork and beef insulin....(your vet will understand that)

But guessing you are flying pet over, so becareful of time change and giving insulin eh

Thanks for replies - Vet has suggested Caninsulin which looks like it can be got in Canada. I have also seen that they give cats Lantus/ glargine which can be obtained in both countries. I just didn't want to go through getting his blood sugars stabilised and then not be able to get the same type of insulin and have to start the process again.

One is medium acting and one is long acting so don't know if anyone has experinces of these insulins.

Cat's should respond better to a meat diet rather than biscuits, especially if they are bit overweight. Keeps the blood sugar levels more stable.

Caninsulin is readily available here and not expensive.

Finding a good vet shouldn't be hard, start by asking people around your area and google vets in area...
