Did the Turks get bored with Ankara? The capital of Australia is? The capital of Brazil is? The capital of Germany is/was? The capital of Canada is? The capital of The Netherlands is? Many people would get those questions wrong. |

ooo you,
The point, you want a point? Try this one- Is it reasonable to expect a national news broadcast to get their facts right? Did you know that hair model, "actor" and French former footballer David Ginola, was , according to the times, the voice of Jacques the shrimp in "Finding Nemo"? No?, neither did he, because he wasnt! Kids today eh! |

I've spotted a couple of "facts" in that bastion of journalistic integrity "The Times" that were clearly wrong recently. Did you know that hair model, "actor" and French former footballer David Ginola, was , according to the times, the voice of Jacques the shrimp in "Finding Nemo"? No?, neither did he, because he wasnt! Kids today eh! Country, dogs, going. |

I think it is. Most of the govermentalising gets done out of Amsterdam, though. Utrecht doesn't figure. That's OK. I don't think Batty is all that much into cigars.

Nasty things that can give you cancer of the tongue and mouth. |

Gosh, let me see. Expecting someone to know the capital city of a country, and expecting someone to know which actor was a voice in Nemo. I can see international ramifications for both, but one seems slightlyl more important than the other. The nemo question could fail you in a pub quiz.
Country, dogs, going. The other one I spotted yesterday was regarding the british nobel prize winner (actually a dual US/ British citizen) who shared his prize with "2 US Physicists", one of whom was actually from Canada. Its since been modified to say something else Yes, its not as crass as misidentifying a capital city, but its the same malaise, I guess I just expected better from the "Paper of record" ( if not the CBC obviously). |

Yes of course it is. I just don't think this particular fact is that important. Unless of course you feel that CBC reporting is riddled with inaccuracies and this is just the latest in a long list of errors.
Well I do. You seem not to. |

Let's wait and see how many references to "the Rockies" there will be in the news at this winter's 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. ;)

Re: and the capital of Turkey is...
If you want seriously ballsed-up journalism, try this one for size.
http://media.www.villanovan.com/medi...-3787790.shtml Four fifths? Try about 8%, mate. And please try to make a distinction between reserves and inferred resources. At that rate of production, Rwanda was supplying not just the world but several neighbouring planetary systems. Africa, in total, provided about a third of world supply in 2008. A lot of that was from perfectly legitimate operations. Just the three processors, is it. I'm sure the other 30 or so would be surprised to hear that. If you're going to name three processors, at least try to get one of the names right. And some facts. It might help you to avoid being sued for libel. One of those companies is very, very clear about where it gets its materials (Australia - usually the world's largest source, by the way - Canada and Mozambique). It will not buy anything from Central Africa. The other two are equally ethical. It is true that some processors are less upstanding. Everyone in the industry knows where the dodgy stuff goes, and it ain't the West. Unfortunately, this pillock isn't the only one to keep repeating these urban myths. Drivel like this comes out almost daily. It got worse when Hilary Clinton visited the Congo. I have heard a rumour that Oprah is going to pick up on it. That will not help anyone. |

It's never been the capital of Turkey. I thought that Ataturk chose Ankara as the capital as part of moving away from the Ottoman past. |
