Despite being a bad hombre, there's something unsavory about one country imposing a death penalty on a foreigner from a non-death penalty country. He should be kept on Chinese jail with Canada paying for his upkeep.

He should have committed his crime in a non-death penalty country if he didn't want to take the chance on it being imposed. Should other countries' penalties apply to their citizens who commit crimes in Canada? If so, should China pay for the execution of a Chinese citizen who is caught smuggling drugs in Canada?

Why does China admit a foreigner with convictions for drug trafficking into the country? If anyone from anywhere else came to Canada with a background like that FL would send them packing on the next flight home.

This isn't about imposing penalties, it's about not imposing a specific penalty, namely the death penalty (which I am not entirely against, by the way). If he were a serial killer in China I wouldn't be proposing leniancy.

The Charles Ng case set a precedent for extradition to countries with the death penalty, but each case would probably be contested. Of course Canada won't start executing prisoners because of the decision of any court, foreign or domestic. The main rule regarding extradition seems to be "Is the crime they are charged with also a crime in Canada?", which will likely be the topic at the February hearing of Meng Wanzhou.

Maybe he lied, as people frequently do when entering both the US and Canada.

The BE US visa forum is littered with cases where someone has a drug offence on their record, and has on one or more occasions entered the US on the VWP without declaring their conviction, but now their employer wants to send them to work in the US, which means a full criminal background check to get a work visa .... and things become rather complicated!

You can see that anonymity soon being a thing if the past as big data spreads it's tentacles. And of course China is at the forefront.
