Sorry, attack of work. My OH is having lunch with the man who came up with the scheme for this county so we should know soon. In the meantime we might consider the convenience of the Canadian highway exit numbering scheme, the exits on the 401 in Ontario are numbered for the distance in miles from Detroit.

The big benefit of that being that they don't have to create a 4a, 4b, 4c, etc, if they have to squeeze a few junctions in after construction.

An attack of work ! Don't you know that work is the curse of the drinking class.

Renumbering the exits, US style, using the distance between them from the Ambassador Bridge or wherever would be a great idea. At least then if you are trying to navigate you know the distance between exits.

That is how the exits are numbered. Something that leapt out at me when I printed the directions to somewhere from mapquest and, dude, it was like all lined up.

The emergency number thing has me puzzled, we're number 477125, the neighbour is 477007, I can't think of a measure that seperates us by 118 units so I don't think it's a linear measure. Even if it was, 477000 somethings from where? America? The county line? Perhaps the numbers are some sort of grid coordinates. That would make sense as many of the roads have the same name and people are often lost because they confuse 4th Line, 4th Line, 4th Line OS, 4th Line EHS, 4th Line SW and 4th line. It took me a month of Saturdays to find the dump.

Also, can't bring myself to say wader instead of water - tried 4 times to order a water the other day before the woman next to me in the queue stepped in as an interpreter and ordered a wader for me....

From the surveyors' point at the start of the road, line, street or whatever. And one number is 10 meters. At least that's what the civic address folks at the Colchester County offices told me. So 118 units between you and your neighbor should be 1.18 kms.

Kilometers from the end of the hwy in Windsor if we are to be pedantic.

Let us know about the 911 numbers though as thats long been a mystery to me! It doesnt seem quite linear to me either, and there is no way my road is over 7km long, so it cant be 10m divisions here....

.... and dbd's place, while well in the boonies, isn't 4770 km from the next corner.

As ever, the system is obviously different in different places.

It's based on the number of Double-doubles sold at the nearest Timmies during the day the lot was constructed eh?

It might be that.

Or quite possibly there isn't a system at all. For example, the houses on my street increment by 4 on each side of the street, not 2.

Very puzzling. (The street predates the use of metric units in Canada by about 100 years).

I'm none the wiser, the topic having been forgotten at lunch. I should see Mr. Numbers tomorrow at a barbecue, if so, I'll ask.

I think this is genuinely the first barbecue I've been to hosted by the unhyphenated and so I'm at a loss to know what to take. The hosts are typical Canadians, a male-male married couple who are having the event to housewarm their "cottage"; a recently desanctified church. They usually live in an art deco mansion with tin on the ceilings and a dope dealer resident in the former stables. They seem to already have two of everything one might expect Elton John to own. I suppose we'll take them booze and drugs though something more original would be good. I'd like to out-kitsch them but when last they were here they brought souvenirs of Nixon's 1968 election campaign; it's hard to surpass the tackiness of elephant mugs.

I'm surprised at your lack of imagination.

A ball of string and some bacon.

Obviously.

My 2 boys have made a pact between them to NOT lose their Accent (they're 11 & 16) however, my daughter (9) sounds like the rest of her Canadian friends already - we only arrived August '08. However, after the weekend she sounds more English again! Plus when she reads aloud it's always very British!

I think it's because my daughter is very social & has been doing a lot of extra curricular stuff with Canadian kids - for example, she successfully auditioned for "The Young Canadians" & will be in this year's Calgary Stampede Grandstand show. Therefore, she has had to sing with a Canadian accent to blend in, so I guess that's pushed her along a bit!

Any clothing related paraphenalia you can buy at the Beer Store or a Stompin' Tom CD may do the trick.
