Starbucks in the UK has variable coffee prices ranging from around £2.6 to £4
Pastries are around £2 to £3.5.

For 5 of each I'd not expect much change from £30 in the UK.

I can't see Tim Hortons doing well in the UK, I don't think their coffee is good and neither did my girlfriend.

Their food seemed better than Starbucks in the UK, but I think Starbucks food is shockingly bad.

I think Starbucks have those who prefer sweeter coffee and Costa (the best IMO) and Nero have those who prefer stronger European style coffee. I can't see how Tim Hortons will steal customers away from them, I think they'll just get the convenience customers.

So I just had a quick look at a UK Customs Officer salary and this is quoted
Starter: £16,000 to £21,000 (Assistant officer)

Experienced: £22,000

Highly Experienced: £26,000 or more

https://nationalcareersservice.direc...ustoms-officer

Converted to the Canadian dollar that would be 26,000 = 43,176 or thereabouts.

Somebody starting out as a Canadian Customs Officer starts at $59,518 and tops out at my level at $70,120

So judging by that Id better keep my mouth shut

A UK police officer starts at 19,383 and tops out at 37,254 (61,865)

Toronto Police Service Base Salary

Cadet in Training $59,802
4th Class Constable $66,462
3rd Class Constable $75,967
2nd Class Constable $85,461
1st Class Constable $94,949

City of Winnipeg police officers salary

1st Class After 5 Years $46.56 $3,725.03 $96,850.65

Now I don't know about your world or whatever you work in but salary wise they would be better off in Canada.

Jesus, £20k starting wage for a UK Police officer in terrible.

I would hope it jumps as quick as the RCMP wage.

Entry: $50,674
6 months service: $65,840
12 months service: $71,435
24 months service: $77,032

My boyfriend only drinks Timmys and occasionally Starbucks but then he has grown up on Timmys .

Timmys is s little strong for me as I prefer Starbucks slightly more.

However, Tim Hortons is still better then the overpriced slop that Costa serve! McDonald's make better coffee then Costa IMO

The big financial downside of driving here is that I can't drive a cheapo 20-year-old sports care any more because I don't fancy breaking down at -40C, or sliding off the roads because RWD.

Plus there aren't any bends in the roads, so there's not much point.

I agree it's swings and roundabouts: about the same overall with some things more expensive (internet/cell phone, car insurance in BC etc.), others cheaper (coffee out , hydro, petrol).
Tim Hortons is good value. I go there a lot.
Coffees in coffee shops in the UK are very expensive as I recall. Even in workers cafes these days.

I suppose coming from the US skews my perspective, but just about nearly everything costs a small fortune in Canada when compared to the US on basically the same wages, at least for our wage level. Makes it a difficult country to succeed in.

Yeah, many things are more expensive here than in America. But I'm used to many things I bought in the UK costing the same in pounds as they did in US dollars (e.g. electronics that cost $500 in America costing 500 pounds in the UK), so it's still significantly cheaper here.

I can't say I ever feel in danger of sliding off the road. Sliding deliberately, sure. And we do have bends here.

I think the rest of your post proves my point, you've gone from a cheap sports car to an expensive estate car, not precisely a minivan admittedly.

Some of the changes/increases in BC coming in the new year.

B.C. taxes and fees: what’s changing in 2017 | Globalnews.ca

If only wages would go up at the same pace to cover the various increases.

Yup. That's the other crapper with Canada. The expensive civil service that the low salaried private sector workers have to sustain.

At least in the UK the police actually catch criminals.

Then prices go up and nobody is any better off.

The only way for low paid to get ahead is to get career advancement which pays more, without the necessity of prices rising, not more due to a mandated wage increase with no skill or productivity increase. It may not help those with difficulty holding or securing a min wage job, but it is a case of simple economics.

An alternative could be higher taxes and wage subsidies for employers hiring disadvantaged.

Temp farm workers come in under SAWP, they cost about $16 an hour all in, with productivity 50 to 100% higher than the equivalent domestic workers.

Again sums up the problem with the civil service in Canada and the mentioned professions of border patrol and policing by other posters.

Generous wage increases for doing next to nothing extra.

YAWN

By all means have a go at public servants and how overpaid they are and do little for what they get paid.
Im guessing you don't have the gonads to give your job title/occupation and how much your salary is just in case some public servant comments on how that type of job is just above being that of a used car sales person or Walmart greeter.
So how about it JamesM why are you so special? My salary is publicly posted not just on this site for all to see is yours? And if not why not?
Be proud of your profession and what you earn and tell us.
