Call The Midwife

Anyone seen this, newish programme on BBC. Sounds pretty interesting. It's set in London in the 1950's from what I saw of the trailer.

Not seen it but I'm sure I have read a very similar sounding book!

Seen it - episode one - slightly slow but probably due to introducing characters and the nuns. Could be more suited to a female audience given the midwife bit but a nice introduction into the beginnings of the NHS and what would have happened before it ...ie, no C-sections etc.

Episode two with Miranda Hart (not sure if that's her comedy name or real name) but woke the show up a bit and put a new aspect on it ... still mostly about pregnant mums and women giving birth (of course) - still a history lesson and with a few twists like single pregnant girls and homes for them but nobody told them their baby would get taken away and given up for adoption almost immediately.

I think it's easy to get drawn into that world - especially if you've had a baby in today's world and can imagine what it might have been like for your Granny. Sad bit was the single mums' home coz we all know that's true.

Yes apparently there is a book but I checked on Chapters/Indigo and they have used hard copies so not sure if there has been a paperback version released yet. I would like to read the book(s) if I could get hold of a copy.

The write up I saw described it as similar to All Creatures Great and Small if that's anything to go by. Guess I will keep an eye on TVO and PBS channels for information.

I've been watching it on BBC iplayer. If it didn't lag it would actually be really interesting.
I agree though that maybe it's a woman's kind of program. Not enough blood and gore (of the right kind) for my OH!!!

Based on a series of, I believe, 3 books by Jennifer Worth who died in 2011, and are stories of her experiences as a midwife in the mid 1950s.
