Who said anything about suing? I was just curious, like I said. A day off is great, but only if you're salaried or can afford it. And yes, even one day can hurt financially, especially if you've not had time to plan it.
It now looks like it'll only be affecting some departments.

Hear Hear - I'm unemployed again for the way I was treated. I've complained to the powers that be about being constructively dismissed and the hostile working atmosphere. I'm not expecting it to come to anything for myself and on the plus side I miss Black Friday and Christmas at the Mall and the freezing cold stock room with insufficient light etc. I'm not devastated.

What about the societal acceptance for the parasitic behaviour of healthy people who choose to take employment insurance when there are perfectly good jobs for them to take? Sometimes this country is a disgrace.

Re: Business closing an extra day over Christmas
Made for a quiet Monday and Tuesday on site this year, because our directly employed hourly staff get the Stat Holiday when it is supposed to be (Tuesday), because their holiday pay is spread throughout the year but as they generally live in the Okanagan and my site is in Metro Vancouver, they elected to take Monday off instead, because they travel home at weekends.
Non-union sub-trades followed suit as it made more sense.
This would have been fine, however some of our Unionised sub-trades took the Tuesday, because the Union didn't want them to move it to Monday to match the rest of the site, in order to honour the fallen.
We stopped at 11.11 as per UK tradition in respect.
I'm not quite sure about the Remembrance Day Stat holiday - it's not as if spending the day down the pub (which is pretty much what construction people 'do'), or having a 'pyjama day' shows any respect to our armed forces...

You wrote this while in the UK, right? Then I couldn't agree more.

Does this mean you'll be heading Eastwards sooner than originally planned?

Oh bugger. Less than devastating it might be, and well done you for escaping the retail hell of Black Friday and the run up to Christmas, but that's still pretty crappy news. All the best in finding something better

Thanks, it also looks like I'm going for a fairly major surgery, find out tomorrow what my real options are, never rains but it pours lol. Eastwards is still away away I'm afraid, we have 2 bathroom reno's and a basement to finish and landscaping and about 20 cars to get shot of before we go anywhere. I really want to do something for myself, but OH wants us to wait until we move. I'm just going to apply for anything that is remotely interesting that isn't retail.
Maybe you could go back to school? Is that what you mean by doing something for yourself? Go for that option as soon as you can

Re: Business closing an extra day over Christmas
It dawned on my today that as I am hourly paid I might not be paid for the three holidays around Xmas... That's a lot of money to lose when I wasn't expecting it!!!
