British Media Slams Canada at the Games

Re: British Media Slams Canada at the Games
If you really want to lose a pointless event, ditch the male hockey. It's nothing more than extension of the NHL and the players don't give a $hit about it. There was ample evidence of that yesterday, in the opener against Norway. It seems a little odd to me that the cream of the NHL couldn't beat a Norwegian carpenter. Not once in 20 minutes. The scoring did start in the second period. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall in the changing room during the break. I can only begin to imagine the bollocking dished out by the coach.
You may not know SFA about hockey, but Norway and the other "weaker" teams play together regularly in proffesional european leagues. The same core group plays together every year for the world championships. They have had lots of practice time together over the past few weeks. They employ a center ice trap scheme designed to prevent the opposition from skating/passing past their defense into their zone for scoring chances. This was not an unknown, it was expected.
The Canadian and other NHL players arrived in Vancouver Sunday evening, many playing earlier that day for their club teams. Those based on teams in the eastern half of the continent have a 3 hour time difference. The team had 1 hour of practice on Monday before playing yesterday. The first period in which Canada did not score was because the players were getting used to their line mates and the style that their new coach wants them to play. It only took one period though, then they started clickng and the game ended up 8-0. If it were not for the solid play of Norways goalie who does wood working as a hobby and gets paid to play hockey, it would have been even uglier a lot earlier.

The players don't give a shit? lol, unbeleivably stupid comment. Pointless? 12 mens teams and 7 flag bearers, neither were Canada or the US. Men's hockey will be the most watched, best attended and will bring in a wholesome profit that you can take to the bank. It is the marquee event at the Olympics, not just in Canada either. To think that a kid growing up in NS or Montreal or Saskachewan "don't give a shit" to play for their country at the Olympics is just plain ignorant.

Obviously I am not in the UK but I can't exactly imagine these negative articles being on the front or back page. Probably just a small column somewhere in the middle. Personally I don't think it is much of a revenue driver for the British press- infact the Canadian press are probably getting more revenue and web traffic from sales out of an opportunity to bash the British press about it.

The real treat though is this summer when the ball kickers play and generate 2 or 3 scoring chances every 90 minutes, I have a semi waiting for all that excitement to happen. Do you think England will score a goal?

As devoid as your useless reply. Shouldn't you be looking for something Harper did today? I bet he left the toilet seat up again.

I know what you're saying man, soccer is like totally boring, all they do is kick a ball around, they don't even have sticks. Glad they don't have that dumbass game at the winter Olympics.

Re: British Media Slams Canada at the Games
Blah blah blah - what absolute shite.... If you're going to bitch about the games at least pick something that VANOC had control over......
My complaint - all the "live" venues downtown show next to no live footage of the games. It's just tent after tent of marketing crap. When I asked in the Ontario tent if they'd be showing the games, I got pointed to a couple of small tvs in the corner, while 8 giant screens showed marketing for living in Ontario (you can only imagine how dull that was).
Then at "livetown" in yaletown - surely the mens moguls would be live - with Canada going for its first gold on home soil. Nope - had to leave and find a bar nearby to watch that.....
And Robson square, the centre of it all - you can ziptrek across the square, watch kids dance around on ice, but a big screen showing the games..... nowhere to be seen.
Complete joke...

Maybe in the Premier League the club is bigger than Country (Johhny Evans may not play for Ireland since he is playing for United against Everton). But for Canadian hockey players, pulling on the maple leaf and playing for this country is MASSIVE in way that Manchester City or Chelsea or Newcastle could only dream of!
If anyone wants to find out how big hockey is for the nations that play watch "Miracle on Ice." (It's about the US team, but it's the same principle)
Iginla played better for Canada than he has for the flames all season.
If you really want to know who is full of the brown steamy stuff (in this case), Lord Vader or Novo, go to the local sports bar and quote both posts!
If you come out dead then Lord Vader was right!

Anyway not to bemoan the point but the energy and smiling faces is the only indicator I need to know that the games here are a massive success, you cant help but get caught up in it. Pubic opinion has had a dramatic turn around in support of the games, even myself a die hard moaner of the waste of the games, is having difficulty not getting caught up in the atmosphere.
