Theresa, your lack of judgement and generosity is mind boggling ...

...why create so much uncertainty and lack of goodwill.

Given that the offer was made by May months ago, I do wonder why no-one is asking the same question of Merkel, who rejected it out of hand.

She (Merkel) rejected colluding with May in an attempted end run around the EU negotiators, rejecting any discussions of substance before A50 was triggered.

Well, the referendum last year resulted in the goalposts having to be moved and negotiations are ongoing.

Another than that, I don't see what the issue is.

I often wonder whether those that speak on this issue recognise how their words will be received by the man in the street.

Joe Bloggs in the pub will, if he ever listens to the news, not be at all pleased with Tusk's remarks following May's offer. His bottom line will be "This is our bloody country, what right has he to dictate to us who we'll let live here? Mine's a pint"

I appreciate that Tusk is playing to a different audience but May could come out of this well as the aggrieved party if, as it looks, the EU is saying it's our way or no way.

Imagine Canada had some enormous shift in its national structure (joining the US, splitting into East/West or some other far fetched scenario). Then, as a result of the change, imagine people who had settled in Canada under perfectly legitimate circumstances, contributed to the country, and even considered themselves Canadian (many on this site) were told, "sorry, we may have to rescind your citizenship rights, probably not, but possibly...and if we do you may need to go back to your old country etc etc."

Is that not an issue ?

But a closer analogy would be Delaware declaring independence from the USA and guaranteeing certain rights to citizens of the other 49 states but then adding that the final court of appeal on implementing those rights would be the highest court in Delaware, not the US Supreme Court.

Are you arguing that EU citizens currently living in UK should be given UK citizenship, something that they were perfectly able to apply for while they were living in the UK?

I thought that the UK was proposing that such a route will be available to them. I accept that I could be wrong.

The referendum for the UK to leave the EU has happened, like it or not. Lots of things will result from that, like it or not.

With the utmost of respect to you, second guessing what may, or may not, result from the negotiations that will result from the referendum is a fool's game.

I'm not able to see what's wrong with May's proposal (as reported in the Guardian). There are some loose ends, such as the status of the children of people on the five year program, but I don't think it was intended as a comprehensive plan. What is the counter proposal of those who say it's not enough?

The three stages of public reaction to Brexit.

1 They need us more than we need them.
2 The EU are bullying us into a bad deal.
3 Why did no one tell us it would be this ****?

1 has been and gone and proved a fallacy. They are starting on 2. 3 will likely last several decades.

I don't think there has been a solution provided to allow seasonal migrant workers. There is not much fruit to be picked in December. How is that going to work?

I believe the Guardian reported on that too here: Match offer made by the EU

I don't know how correct that article is, but the suggestion that the UK will keep free movement of EU nationals post brexit is, I believe, somewhat bizarre. After all, isn't the prevention of free movement of people one of the main points argued by the leavers pre-referendum, however one argues what was meant by that?
