Any wine will do. Do what most Canadians do, which is hand over a very mediocre bottle of wine and then drink my London Pride all night.

I don't mind them cultivating a taste for London Pride at my expense but I do keep my ESB well stashed ! I just got another 24 cans. That has to see me through to the last week of October !

Riv - ah yes, forgot about the oz. that explains it.

CT - the Pinot would be my choice, I think, next time I'm in a Canadian liquor store. I tend to drink NZ whites which are about £6-7 on sale in UK.

I'm not a cork snob or a vqa snob but when some of these vintners are matching little patches of grapes to groups of casks or even individual casks it pays to talk to them. Terroire is everything no matter what the price is and a little research or a phone call can make your choice less hit and miss (been wild about $10 wine from a tiny little place).. I met one of the Wild Goose Kruger sons in Welcome Inn Pub in Gallagher Lake once years ago and he was raving about the chardonnay grapes they were harvesting then so we went up there with the whole family next day, and later that year when it was ready we bought because a good year sells out quick. I recall opening a bottle of that at supper at my friends' house in Van after a trip to Oliver and they seemed certain it was measureably better than a different wine they had paid more for. :p

That's all I could get ! I have to supplement it with London Pride and/or Wells IPA. ;)

The Pride is good of course, but I always found the Wells IPA to be a bit thin and gassy. Better than having to lower oneself to Boddingtons or Tetleys but only just.

We have been buying this wine up in bulk - Farnese Sangiovese IGT | LCBO

It's incredibly well-priced, and is a really, really nice red wine. $13 for a 1.5L bottle, or $7 for a standard 750mL bottle. This is one of our favourites in the house.

I'm always amused by wine tasting descriptors.

leather, cherry, marzipan, tobacco
