BC fires

Re: BC fires
Remember that when Mount St. Helen's erupted that cloud went around twice as the earth rotated under it, once a day....
and the militia shovelled ash off the streets of Kitsilano.

That further drop is good news!!
I've just heard (4:30 pm) on the radio that Prince George, where so many of the evacuees have gone, is expecting thunder and lightening this evening / tonight

Re: BC fires
Williams Lake and surrounding area served with Evacuation Order ca 6 pm ............. have to evacuate SOUTH even though Hwy 97 is closed around 100 M House.
Williams Lake not at immediate risk of fire, but the fire jumped the highway north of WL, so they would have only one way to evacuate if it did travel the 5 or so kilometres to the town.
The evacuees will be led by RCMP escort, down to Highway 24 across to Little Fort (itself under threat), then it is preferred for them to turn north on Highway 5 and make their way to Prince George, but may also go south to Kamloops though there is not much space left there.
An Evacuation Centre also opened in the Lower Mainland late Friday, at the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds, for evacuees who have been caught down here.

Re: BC fires
We used Redding as a overnight stop-over coming North from the Redwoods up to Shasta and then up towards Crater Lake. We just stayed on the edge of town - it seemed featureless. Thankfully avoided the afire near Oroville- the big fires seem predominantly to be in the a south- no date icecream- had blackberry gelato this evening which was scrummy

I have memories of camping at Crater Lake ......... in snow ......... in mid-August
NOT what we expected!
camp fires warmed us up ............ and it turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, literally, as snow had never fallen in August before and it hasn't since

Re: BC fires
They showed some of that on Global News about 6:30 pm ........... smoke billowing up. So sad that buildings have been lost.
Have to say this is the worst summer for so many fires all over BC in the 49 years we've lived in BC ................. I thought the Kelowna fire in 2003 and then the Maclure / Barriere fire also in 2003 that burned for something over 70 days were bad, but the current ones are covering such a massive area.
and I fear it's going to go on for weeks .......... I think the long range forecast shows warmer than normal temperatures through July and August.

Re: BC fires
oh yes ....... the box of dates at Christmas, still seemingly attached to a stalk, and with a little white pik to lift a date.
I saw a box like that in a store here 4 or 5 years ago ............. hopefully from that year's date production.
I occasionally buy a large (2 lb) box of pitted dates from Safeway, to nibble on ........... Medjool Dates, packed in Yuma, AZ. They are labelled Product of USA, and I think that means they have to be grown in the US (as well as packed there).

Re: BC fires
News reports this morning are suggesting that an illegal campfire on the beach is suspected as the cause.
There is a total provincial ban on open fires except for a narrow band in the north west and along the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island in the fog region.
How daft can people be???
Hope they find the people responsible and haul them into court.

Re: BC fires
It's smelling really smokey here today. These fires are so awful and so many caused by human carelessness too. It's not all lightening strikes.
