BBC IPlayer to require a TV Licence from 1st September 2016

Even if the VPN company coughed up their records, if the VPN service encrypts the content, there's no way that their own data will show what content was being consumed. "Some packets were transferred through a VPN tunnel, M'Lud. We don't know what was in them or where they came from or where they went to, but something fishy was definitely going on" doesn't sound like a very convincing case to me

So, it's 1st September in the UK now.
Unless something is going to happen 'in the morning', it would appear that all that has happened is that they have changed the wording on TV Licensing and BBC websites that says 'you are a very naughty person, please stop watching BBC IPlayer live or we will fine you £1000 if we catch you...'
Will check again tomorrow morning...

HMG have just changed the TV licensing legislation to say that you DO need a TV licence even if you only watch BBC programmes after original broadcast the BBC iPlayer. Prior to this legislation, you did NOT need a TV licence if you only watched BBC content through iPlayer, which lead to a small but noticeable drop in TV licences etc.....

iPlayer catchup service will require user login within weeks, says BBC
BBC denies move is part of crackdown on TV licence evasion, but adds it may help identify those using service without paying

Having checked the iPlayer page today, yes, there is an invitation to "register" as a user, but all that involves is providing an email address and UK postcode (supposedly not for ID purposes, but to provide you with programme recommendations appropriate to your area) and setting a password. So far so good (knock on wood).

I was round my mates house last night and she was watching British tv using Roku and the FOTV (FilmOn) app that comes as standard on it. No VPN needed. No questions asked.

I, for one, would be more than happy to pay for iPlayer. The BBC should be putting their efforts into legalising its use outside of the UK rather than trying to block it.

Re: BBC IPlayer to require a TV Licence from 1st September 2016
Plenty of people lost it, some suppliers of dns services just said they no longer support iplayer, some introduced work arounds, same with vpn’s. The bbc has a plan which they did make public, and the uk law was changed to accomodate. Using iplayer now legally requires a tv license, which wasa uk lophole to avoid the license fee but its still not legal if used abroad. The plan is to require a login from a known license payer which is pretty much in place, then if they see foreign use they block that account until some uk based activity like proving you are home occurs, simple...
Still work around-able in some devious way im sure but they are trying...

I think 'devious' sounds a bit of an overstatement to describe two clicks to activate a vpn and iPlayer's not even asking me if I have a licence.
I was watching the BBC series Rellik recently. As an experiment I went to one of my usual sources and watched the last episode 10 minutes after it ended on UK TV. iPlayer is still "expecting" me back to finish it.
I think they're fighting a losing battle. And wasting resources doing so.
