Hi Martin - thanks for your messages :D
Just wondered about the Battlefords area as a potential place to set up a home with my hubby and young son (8). We've been in AB for 3 years but are considering a move to Sask to see if we can better find the lifestyle we're looking for. We haven't seen a house as yet (though there is one farm listed that looks good though rather pricey) but I'm trying to do some research on a few different places and than hope to visit fairly shortly. I listed the sort of things I'd like to know about in the thread above: "We want cheapish house and land (or build), rural, FI school, access to Edmonton a couple of times a month for short term (until hubby can ditch the job) - access to reasonable size centre (Stony-sized) for weekly shop - access to larger centre for monthly shops and bigger purchases and entertainment for sproglet - ideally a university town (obviously no pressure on said child of course ) Oh - yeah and hubby wants rolling land with some trees if possible with nearby fishable water source, ATV and skidoo trails". But would also be interested in learning how settled you feel there, how your family is fitting in, getting on with the locals etc? Are there enough things to do? I like the location cos everything seems to be in reach - ie Saskatoon, Lloydminster, Edmonton when you need them - but far enough away the rest of the time that you can forget about the rat race. :) Anyway, any info you can give would be very helpful - and decided to post my questions and your answers in the thread in case it helps others too. Thanks again :D:thumbsup: We have settled in very well, we've been here just over a year and still like it here. The locals are very friendly and we are fitting in very well. There is a FI school here that we have been told is very good although our kids go to the local catholic school which is small and friendly. As I said in the PM the land and houses are still affordable compared to many other places although prices are rising. There are all the usual things here like swimming, bowling, cinema, etc and the city is supposed to be building a new multiplex facility. We are in between Edmonton,Lloyd and Saskatoon with easy access to all of them if we want to do some serious shopping although we have the usual stores here like walmart,sobeys,Co-op and canadian wholesale. Plenty of places to go Skidooing and ATV riding, Jackfish lake is only 25 minutes away with beaches, swimming, boating and fishing, and we have a ski hill about 20 mins away which we used last winter. Overall it's a small and friendly community, it's a lot smaller than where we lived in the UK but so far we're enjoying the slower pace of life. HTH Martin and Lynne |

Hi Alvic - yep I think the secret is getting out!
I've fancied Saskatchewan from the day when I was 21 and having a really bad day at college and feeling against the world in general (there may have been a little alcohol involved ;)) that I opened up the atlas randomly and stuck my finger on the page with my eyes shut - landed bang on central Sask! Hadn't even heard of it before then and had no thoughts of moving to Canada - xxx years later - I'm here! This is not, may I add, the only reason we are now considering the move :rofl Our neighbours are originally from Weyburn, they are very friendly people who have gone out of their way to help us since we've arrived. Given us a really good impression of the people in Sask - as have other ex-Sask residents we've met in AB. Our neighbours are also thinking of returning and have offered to go halves on a piece of land down there with us. We are not so keen on the landscape and climate of the south (I'm really not good in too much heat in the summer) but its made us consider the province more seriously. From the tone of your posts, you're happy there I presume?:D Unfortunately the tone of my posts are not that correct then as we are still in Northern Ireland hope to be in Saskatchewan by early Nov 07. We were only there for six days in June and were bowled over...we have never met such friendly helpful peeps and we are from Ireland where the people are supposed to be very friendly, but nothing compared to Sask residents. You may get there before me yet. We had no choice on the southern part as my OH has got a job in Regina....but we will give it a go and see what we think. It sound a fab idea about your neighbours sharing the cost of land with you:) |

Martin & Lynne Alvic - Oh - I thought you were already there - but must be i remember reading your posts about/during your visit maybe? Now if only those blessed PPRs would arrive, or else our renewed WPs, I'd be happy and arranging a visit. Still, patience is a virtue... :) |
